Haya is Part of faith.
The Islamic Concept of Modesty and Self-Respect
🌙 Holiday Season: Let Our Jolly Not Lead to Folly!
During times of celebration and festivity, it becomes especially important to remember the Islamic values that guide our behavior and character.
What is Haya?
This beautiful term covers a wide number of concepts. In English, it may be translated as modesty, shyness, self-respect, bashfulness, shame, honor, and humility.
Islamically, Haya is an attribute that pushes the believer to avoid anything distasteful or offensive. It is the inner voice that guides us toward righteousness and restrains us from wrongdoing.
🌟 The Importance of Haya
Haya plays a huge role in the lives of Muslims because it is a very important part of our Iman (faith/belief). If we do not have any form of haya within us, then it is most likely that our iman is very weak.
📿 Teachings from the Prophet ﷺ
Faith (belief) consists of more than sixty branches (i.e., parts). And Haya is a part of faith."
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Sahih Bukhari)
"Every faith has an innate character. The character of Islam is modesty."
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Hadith)
"Haya does not bring anything except good."
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Sahih Bukhari)
Indeed, haya (modesty) and Iman are companions. When one of them is lifted, the other leaves as well."
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Baihaqi)
"Haya comes from Iman; Iman leads to Paradise. Obscenity comes from antipathy, and antipathy leads to the fire."
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Sahih Bukhari)
📖 Guidance from the Quran
"Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them, and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do.
And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty..."
— Surah An-Nur 24:30-31
"Lo! The noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct. Lo! Allah is the Knower, the Aware."
— Surah Al-Hujurat 49:13

- Avoid situations that compromise your modesty
- Remember that Allah sees and knows everything
🤲 Final Reflection
Haya is not just about outward appearance or behavior. It is a comprehensive quality that affects our thoughts, words, and actions. It is the inner compass that guides us toward righteousness and restrains us from evil.
When we strengthen our haya, we strengthen our faith. When we protect our modesty, we protect our relationship with Allah. Let us strive to embody this beautiful quality in every aspect of our lives.
May Allah ﷻ grant us true haya and make us among those who are modest and God-conscious. Ameen.
