Prophet Elisha (Al-Yasa) ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู
Honoured by Allah Among the Best of His Creation
"And remember Ishmael, Elisha, and Dhul-Kiflโall are among the best."
โ Surah Sad 38:48
Among the prophets of the Children of Israel, Prophet Elisha โ known in Arabic as Al-Yasa (AS)โis one whose story is brief in the sources but whose honour is unmistakeable. Allah mentions him twice in the Quran, placing his name among the greatest of prophets and describing him simply as one of "the best." That alone is a distinction beyond measure.
His is a story of continuity โ of carrying forward the light of prophethood at a time when the Children of Israel repeatedly strayed, and of remaining faithful to the message entrusted to him until the end of his life.
๐ฟ His Lineage and Connection to Elijah
According to the scholars, Elisha (AS) was a descendant of the line of Prophet Yusuf (AS) โ specifically: Elisha, son of Adi, son of Shultam, son of Aphraem, son of Yusuf (Joseph), son of Ishaq (Isaac), son of Ibrahim (Abraham). Some scholars have also said that he was the cousin of Prophet Ilyas (Elijah, AS).
It is narrated that Elisha (AS) had been hiding with Prophet Ilyas (AS) in a cave on Mount Qasium, sheltering together from the tyrannical king of Ba'alabak who persecuted the believers. The two prophets lived in close companionship โ and when Ilyas (AS) passed away, Elisha (AS) stepped forward and succeeded him as the prophet to the Children of Israel.
This transition of prophethood โ from one devoted servant of Allah to another โ is itself a sign of Allah's mercy. He never leaves His people without guidance.
๐ His Mission Among the Israelites
Ibn Ishaaq stated that Elisha (AS) was sent to the Children of Israel after Elijah (AS). He lived among his people, calling them to Allah and abiding faithfully by the message and laws that Ilyas (AS) had brought โ continuing that mission with patience and dedication until he passed away.
The Children of Israel were a people who repeatedly returned to error after being guided. Despite witnessing miracle after miracle, despite prophet after prophet being sent to them, they would stray, repent, and stray again. Elisha (AS) served them at one of these difficult junctures โ calling them back to the worship of Allah alone, upholding justice, and embodying the message he had inherited.
After his passing, the dissension among the Israelites increased. Sins multiplied, tyrants arose, and prophets were killed. The pattern of a people who had been given so much โ yet continued to choose heedlessness โ repeated itself. Yet Allah's mercy never ceased, and He continued to send prophets to guide them.
Honoured Twice in the Quran: Allah mentions Elisha (AS) in two places โ Surah Al-An'am (6:86) and Surah Sad (38:48) โ both times in the company of the greatest prophets. In Surah Sad, Allah describes him alongside Ismail and Dhul-Kifl as being among "the best." This brief but powerful praise from Allah is the greatest testimony any servant can receive.
๐ A Lesson in Quiet Dedication
The story of Elisha (AS) carries a quiet but powerful lesson. Not every prophet's story is filled with dramatic miracles and sweeping events. Some prophets served faithfully, called their people with sincerity, upheld the truth without fanfare โ and passed away having fulfilled their trust completely.
Elisha (AS) is one of them. His greatness lies not in spectacular recorded events but in the simple, profound fact that Allah called him "among the best." For a servant of Allah, there is no higher praise. It reminds us that value in the sight of Allah is not measured by fame or miracles โ but by sincerity, faithfulness, and the quiet, steadfast fulfilment of one's duty to the Creator.
May Allah grant us the quiet sincerity of Prophet Elisha (AS) โ to fulfil our duties to Allah faithfully, without need for recognition, trusting that He sees and values every sincere act of worship.
ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู โ Peace be upon him
