Prophet Ayoub (Job) ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู…

The Prophet of Patience โ€” A Story of Trial, Faith and Gratitude

"Truly! We found him patient. How excellent a slave! Verily, he was ever oft-returning in repentance to Us!"

โ€” Surah Sad 38:44

Among all the prophets of Allah, Ayoub (AS) is remembered above all for one quality โ€” patience. His story is one of the most profound in the Quran and in Islamic tradition: a man of great wealth, noble character and unwavering faith, who was stripped of everything โ€” his possessions, his children, his health โ€” and yet never lost his trust in Allah for a single moment.

His story is a reminder that trials are not signs of Allah's anger โ€” they are often signs of His love, and of the elevated station He wishes to bestow upon His chosen servants.

๐ŸŒฟ A Man of Blessing and Gratitude

Ayoub (AS) was a descendant of Ibrahim (AS), blessed with abundant wealth โ€” vast lands, flocks and herds, servants and children. Yet he was not a man attached to his possessions. He used his wealth generously: freeing enslaved people, feeding the poor, clothing the needy, and treating those who received his charity with such gentleness that they felt they were doing him the favour.

In the gatherings of angels, he was praised as the finest human being on earth โ€” a man who worshipped Allah not for the blessings he received but out of sincere love and devotion.

This was precisely what Iblis refused to accept. He told Allah that Ayoub's worship was nothing more than a transaction โ€” that he was only grateful because of his wealth. "Strip him of his blessings," Iblis argued, "and his tongue will no longer remember You." Allah, knowing the truth of His servant's heart, permitted the test to begin.

๐Ÿ’” Loss of Wealth, Children and Health

Iblis and his helpers set about destroying everything Ayoub (AS) had. His cattle were taken, his servants, his farms โ€” all gone. Iblis came to him disguised as a wise old man, suggesting that Allah had abandoned him to please his enemies. Ayoub (AS) responded with serenity: "What Allah has taken away belongs to Him. I was only its trustee for a while." And he prostrated in gratitude.

Iblis returned to Allah, convinced Ayoub (AS) only endured because his children were still alive. When given permission, he caused the house where the children lived to collapse, killing all of them. Again, Ayoub (AS) remained firm: "Allah sometimes gives and sometimes takes. Whether a thing is beneficial or harmful to me, I will remain firm in my belief and remain thankful to my Creator."

Still not satisfied, Iblis was granted authority over Ayoub's body โ€” but not over his soul, intellect or heart. He filled his body with disease until it was reduced to mere skin and bone. Friends and relatives abandoned him. Visitors felt disgusted. Only his devoted wife remained โ€” caring for him through years of suffering, working to provide for him, never once abandoning the man she loved.

๐Ÿ’›

How Long Did He Suffer? When his wife, weakened and tearful, asked Ayoub (AS) how long he would endure, he asked her: "How long did I enjoy good health and riches?" She replied: "Eighty years." He asked: "And how long have I been suffering?" She said: "Seven years." He replied: "In that case I am ashamed to call on my Lord to remove the hardship โ€” for I have not yet suffered as long as the years of my ease."

โœจ The Prayer and the Cure

After years of patience, the moment came when Ayoub (AS) turned to his Lord โ€” not in complaint, but in the most gentle, humble prayer ever uttered:

ุฑูŽู‘ุจูู‘ูŠ ุฃูŽู†ูู‘ูŠ ู…ูŽุณูŽู‘ู†ููŠูŽ ุงู„ุถูู‘ุฑูู‘ ูˆูŽุฃูŽู†ุชูŽ ุฃูŽุฑู’ุญูŽู…ู ุงู„ุฑูŽู‘ุงุญูู…ููŠู†ูŽ

"Verily! Distress has seized me, and You are the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy."

โ€” Surah Al-Anbiya 21:83

Allah responded immediately: "So We answered his call, and We removed the distress that was on him, and We restored his family to him, and the like thereof along with them โ€” as a mercy from Ourselves and a Reminder for all who worship Us." (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:84)

Allah commanded him to strike the ground with his foot. A spring burst forth โ€” and Ayoub (AS) bathed in it and drank from it, and his health was completely restored. His wife returned, embraced him, and thanked Allah. His wealth, his family, and his strength were all given back โ€” and more besides.

๐Ÿ’š The Lesson of Ayoub (AS)

The story of Ayoub (AS) teaches us that faith is not measured in times of ease โ€” it is revealed in times of hardship. The true believer does not worship Allah only when life is good. Like Ayoub (AS), he remains grateful, patient and trusting even when everything is taken away.

His prayer โ€” "Distress has seized me, and You are the Most Merciful" โ€” is one of the most beautiful in all of Islam. It does not demand. It does not complain. It simply presents the truth to Allah and trusts in His mercy. And Allah, Who never abandons His patient servants, answered him completely.

"Verily! Distress has seized me, and You are the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy."
