Prophet Dawud (David) ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู…

The Prophet, King and Warrior โ€” Gifted with the Zabur and the Voice of Creation

"And to David We gave the Psalms."

โ€” Surah Al-Isra 17:55

โš”๏ธ The Young Man Who Faced Goliath

The story of Dawud (AS) begins on a battlefield. King Saul's army faced the mighty forces of the enemy, led by the fearsome giant Goliath. Goliath challenged any soldier to single combat โ€” and no one dared to step forward. The king offered his daughter's hand in marriage as a reward. Still, silence.

Then a young man from Bethlehem stepped forward โ€” Dawud (AS). His elderly father had sent him only to deliver supplies and report back. Yet this young shepherd walked calmly towards the battle line. Goliath laughed. Even Saul's own men shook their heads.

Dawud (AS) declined the king's heavy armour โ€” it wasn't suited to him. Instead, he picked up a few smooth pebbles and placed them in his shepherd's pouch. When Saul worried how a sling could defeat a giant, Dawud (AS) replied with complete certainty: "Allah Who protected me from the claws of the bear and the fangs of the lion will certainly protect me from this brute!"

As the two faced each other, Dawud (AS) declared: "You may have armour, shield and sword, but I face you in the name of Allah! Today you will see that it is not the sword that kills โ€” but the will and power of Allah!" He placed a pebble in his sling, released it with precision, and Goliath fell dead before he could even draw his weapon. The enemy army fled in disarray.

"So they routed them by Allah's Leave and David killed Goliath, and Allah gave him the kingdom and wisdom, and taught him of that which He willed. And if Allah did not check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief. But Allah is full of Bounty to the Alamin."

โ€” Surah Al-Baqarah 2:251

๐ŸŒฟ Prophethood and the Zabur

Despite becoming a hero overnight, Dawud (AS) was not captured by fame or leadership. He went out into the desert to be alone with Allah, glorifying Him and reflecting on His favours. Allah chose him as a prophet and revealed the Zabur (Psalms) to him โ€” one of the four great divine books.

When Dawud (AS) recited the Zabur, his voice was unlike anything ever heard. Mountains echoed his glorification of Allah. Birds gathered around him and joined in. Animals paused and listened. All of creation responded to his praise of Allah โ€” a miracle granted by Allah to His devoted servant.

Allah also blessed him with the ability to understand the languages of birds and animals, and made iron soft in his hands โ€” allowing him to craft armour without fire or hammer. No craftsman before him had ever had such a gift.

His Fasting and Prayer: The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ said: "The most beloved fasting to Allah was the fasting of Prophet Dawud, who used to fast alternate days. And the most beloved prayer to Allah was the prayer of Dawud โ€” he slept the first half of the night, prayed for one third of it, and again slept for one sixth." โ€” Sahih Al-Bukhari. Even as a king, Dawud (AS) lived a life of extraordinary devotion.

๐Ÿ‘‘ A Just and Humble King

After the death of Saul, the people chose Dawud (AS) as their king โ€” and he proved to be the most just ruler they had ever known. He divided his day into four equal parts: time to earn a living, time to worship Allah, time to listen to the complaints of his people, and time to deliver sermons.

Despite being a king, he did not live on the income of his kingdom. He made and sold weapons with his own hands and lived on that income alone. His justice was so renowned that people came from far away to seek his judgement.

Once, two angels came to him in the form of men with a dispute โ€” to test him. When he judged in favour of one without hearing the other, he realised his error immediately. He fell in prostration, seeking Allah's forgiveness. Allah forgave him completely and declared: "O David! Verily We have placed you as a successor on earth โ€” so judge between men in truth and justice." (Surah Sad 38:26)

๐ŸŒฑ His Son Sulaiman (AS)

Dawud (AS) had a son named Sulaiman (Solomon) โ€” wise and perceptive even as a young child. When two men brought a dispute to Dawud (AS) โ€” one claiming the other's sheep had destroyed his vineyard โ€” Dawud (AS) ruled that the sheep should be given in compensation. But eleven-year-old Sulaiman (AS) offered a wiser solution: let the sheep owner tend the damaged field until the grapes grew back, while the field owner kept the sheep and benefited from their milk and wool.

Dawud (AS) was moved: "This is a sound judgement. Praise be to Allah for gifting you with wisdom." It was the first sign of the extraordinary prophet that Sulaiman (AS) would become.

Prophet Dawud (AS) teaches us that true greatness comes not from strength or status โ€” but from humility before Allah, justice towards people, and constant glorification of the Lord. May Allah grant us a portion of his devotion and his justice.
