Prophet Hizqeel (Ezekiel) ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู
The Prophet Who Witnessed Allah's Power Over Life and Death
"Did you not think of those who went forth from their homes in thousands, fearing death? Allah said to them: 'Die.' And then He restored them to life. Truly, Allah is full of Bounty to mankind, but most men think not."
โ Surah Al-Baqarah 2:243
Among the prophets of the Children of Israel, Prophet Hizqeel (known in the Bible as Ezekiel) holds a unique place โ he was the prophet through whom Allah demonstrated, in the most vivid and unmistakeable way, His absolute power over life and death. His story is brief in the Quran and in Islamic tradition, but its lesson is one of the most profound in all of revelation.
Hizqeel (AS) succeeded the Prophet Yusha (Joshua) ibn Nun as a prophet to the Israelites, after the time of Prophet Kalih (Jephtha). He came to a people who had fled their homeland out of fear of plague and found himself standing over the evidence of their fate โ a vast plain of scattered bones.
๐ฟ The People Who Fled From Death
The story begins with a community known as the people of Damardan. A plague had struck their land, and gripped by terror, thousands of them fled their homes โ abandoning their families, their duties, and their trust in Allah. They believed that by running, they could escape what Allah had decreed for them.
A group who had remained behind in the village perished from the plague. As for those who fled โ Allah decreed their end regardless of their running. The Angel of Death called out to them: "Die, all of you" โ and they perished. Centuries passed. Their bones lay scattered across a barren plain, bleached and dry.
No one could outrun the decree of Allah. The Quran records this as a powerful reminder: death comes whether one flees or stays. It is Allah alone Who gives life and takes it back.
