Prophet Yahya (John) ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู…

The Devoted Prophet โ€” Wise from Childhood, Fearless in Truth

"O Yahya! Hold fast to the Scripture." And We gave him wisdom while yet a child, and pity for men as a mercy from Us, and purity โ€” and he was righteous, and dutiful to his parents."

โ€” Surah Maryam 19:12-14

๐ŸŒฑ A Child Unlike Any Other

Prophet Yahya (AS) was born a stranger to the world of ordinary childhood. While other children played and amused themselves, he was serious and contemplative from his earliest years. While other children sometimes harmed animals out of curiosity, Yahya (AS) showed them tenderness and mercy โ€” sharing his own food with them until nothing remained for himself, eating only fruit or leaves of trees.

He loved reading deeply. When he grew up, Allah called upon him directly: "O Yahya! Hold fast to the Scripture." Allah blessed him with wisdom while still a child โ€” an extraordinary gift that would shape his entire mission.

Allah guided him to study the Book of Jurisprudence with great depth, and he became the wisest and most knowledgeable man of his time โ€” gifted with the ability to pass judgements on people's affairs, interpret the secrets of religion, and guide people to the right path.

๐Ÿคฒ His Extraordinary Devotion to Allah

The depth of Yahya's love for Allah moved everyone who witnessed it. His parents once searched for him and found him at the Jordan River, weeping in profound devotion. On another occasion, his father Zakariyah (AS) found him weeping inside a grave he had dug for himself โ€” to remind him of the Hereafter.

"My son, I have been searching for you, and you are dwelling in this grave weeping!" Zakariyah (AS) said. Yahya (AS) replied gently: "O father, did you not tell me that between Paradise and Hell is only a span โ€” and it will not be crossed except by the tears of weepers?" His father said: "Weep then, my son." And they wept together.

"The dwellers of Paradise are sleepless out of the sweetness of Allah's bounty. That is why the faithful must be sleepless because of Allah's love in their hearts."

โ€” Prophet Yahya (AS)

He found comfort in the open wilderness. He ate leaves, herbs and sometimes locusts. He slept in mountains or in holes in the ground. Sometimes lions or bears would be in the cave he entered โ€” but the animals recognised him as the prophet who cared for all creation, and would leave quietly, lowering their heads. He wept so constantly and so deeply that tears left permanent marks upon his cheeks โ€” yet he found complete peace in the remembrance of Allah.

A Note on His Name: Yahya (AS) is known in English as John the Baptist. He is mentioned in the Quran by name five times, always with great honour. Allah gave him his name directly โ€” and the Quran records that this name had never been given to anyone before him: "We have given that name to none before him." (Surah Maryam 19:7)

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Fearless in Truth โ€” His Martyrdom

When he called people to worship Allah and to repent their sins, Yahya (AS) arrested hearts with the truthfulness of his words. He was utterly fearless. When the tyrant ruler Herod Antipas planned to marry his own niece Salome โ€” a union forbidden by the Torah โ€” Yahya (AS) spoke out clearly and without hesitation: this marriage was forbidden, and he would not approve it under any circumstance.

His pronouncement spread widely and enraged Salome, who had ambitions of ruling the kingdom alongside her uncle. She plotted her revenge with cold calculation โ€” using her charm to extract a promise from Herod, then demanding only one thing in return: the head of Yahya (AS). Herod, blinded by desire, granted her request. The beloved Prophet of Allah was executed.

But the death of Allah's prophet was not without consequence. Those who conspired against him faced a severe punishment โ€” invading armies swept through and destroyed their kingdom. As for Yahya (AS), he died as he had lived โ€” devoted, fearless, and completely at peace with his Lord.

"And Salam (peace) on him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he will be raised up to life again!" โ€” Surah Maryam 19:15
