غزوة بدر

Battle of Badr

The First Great Battle of Islam and a Turning Point in History

"[Remember] when you sought help of your Lord, and He answered you, 'Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another.'" — Surah Al-Anfal (8:9)

Introduction

The Battle of Badr was the first major battle between the Muslims and the Quraysh of Makkah. It took place in the second year after Hijrah and marked a decisive moment in Islamic history.

Despite being greatly outnumbered, the Muslims were granted a remarkable victory by the help of Allah.

Background

After the migration to Madinah, the Quraysh of Makkah continued to oppress the Muslims and seize their property. A caravan led by Abu Sufyan became the focus of tension, leading to a confrontation.

📜 Forces Involved

  • Muslims: Approximately 313 companions
  • Quraysh: Approximately 1,000 warriors

The Muslims were far fewer in number and poorly equipped compared to the Quraysh army.

Key Participants

Many great companions participated in this battle, including:

  • Hamza ibn Abdul-Muttalib (RA), who fought with great courage and later earned the title Asadullah, the Lion of Allah
  • Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA), the young cousin of the Prophet ﷺ who fought bravely in several of the opening duels
  • Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (RA), who stood closely by the side of the Prophet ﷺ throughout the battle
  • Zubayr ibn Al-Awwam (RA), who wore a yellow turban so the Prophet ﷺ could recognise him on the battlefield

The Battle

The battle took place near wells in the region of Badr. The Muslims strategically positioned themselves under the leadership of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The battle began with individual duels, followed by full engagement between both armies.

💡 Did You Know? Before the battle, the Prophet ﷺ spent the night in prayer, raising his hands so earnestly that his cloak slipped from his shoulders — Abu Bakr (RA) gently replaced it, reassuring him that Allah would surely fulfil His promise of help.

Divine Assistance

Allah supported the Muslims with angels and strengthened their hearts during the battle. The Qur'an describes this victory as a sign of divine help for those who believe.
