بِسْمِ اللَّـهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Khalid ibn al-Walid رضي الله عنه
Sayfullah—The Sword of Allah
592-642 CE | The Undefeated Commander
خالد بن الوليد - Khalid ibn al-Walid
Also known as Sayfullah al-Maslul (سيف الله المسلول)
"The Drawn Sword of Allah"
In the annals of military history, few commanders have achieved what Khalid ibn al-Walid رضي الله عنه accomplished. A man who was never defeated in over 100 battles, who conquered two superpowers simultaneously, and who earned the title "The Sword of Allah" from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself. This is the story of the greatest military commander in Islamic history.
From Qurayshi Warrior to Islamic Champion
Born around 592 CE in Makkah, Khalid belonged to the powerful Banu Makhzum clan of the Quraysh tribe. He was raised as a warrior, trained in combat from childhood, and became one of the finest horsemen and swordsmen in Arabia.
Initially, Khalid was among the fiercest opponents of Islam. As a skilled military commander for the Quraysh, he played a vital role in the Battle of Uhud, where his tactical brilliance turned a Muslim victory into a setback when he led the cavalry attack that exploited the archers' mistake.
The Greatest Victory - Embracing Islam
After the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah in 628 CE, Khalid witnessed the Prophet's ﷺ wisdom, mercy, and the unstoppable growth of Islam. The truth became clear to him.
🌟 The Embrace of Faith
In the month of Safar, 8 AH (629 CE), Khalid, along with Amr ibn al-As and Uthman ibn Talha, traveled to Madinah and accepted Islam.
When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saw Khalid approaching, he smiled and said: "Makkah has thrown unto you the best of its sons."
From that moment, Khalid became one of Islam's most devoted defenders. The warrior who had fought against the Muslims at Uhud would now lead them to victory after victory, his sword never again raised except in the cause of Allah.
The Undefeated Commander
Khalid ibn al-Walid رضي الله عنه commanded the forces of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the Rightly Guided Caliphs Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه and Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه.

He defeated the Byzantine Roman Empire and the Sassanid Persian Empire — the two superpowers of his time — often while being vastly outnumbered.
Legendary Victories
⚔️ Battle of Mu'tah (629 CE)
Khalid's first major battle as a Muslim. When the three appointed commanders — Zayd ibn Harithah, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, and Abdullah ibn Rawahah — were martyred, the army turned to Khalid.
Facing a Byzantine army of 200,000 with only 3,000 Muslims, Khalid executed a tactical retreat so brilliant that he saved the entire army from annihilation. The Prophet ﷺ gave him the title "Sayfullah" (Sword of Allah) for this achievement.
🔥 The Ridda Wars (632-633 CE)
After the Prophet's ﷺ death, many Arab tribes apostatized and refused to pay Zakat. Caliph Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه appointed Khalid to lead the campaign against the apostates.
Khalid decisively defeated the false prophet Musaylimah al-Kadhab at the Battle of Yamamah, one of the bloodiest battles in Islamic history. He restored order and brought the Arabian Peninsula back under Islamic authority.
🏛️ Conquest of Mesopotamia (Iraq) - 633 CE
Khalid was sent to conquer Iraq from the mighty Sassanid Persian Empire. His strategic victories included:
- Battle of Chains (Dhāt as-Salāsil) - His first victory in Iraq
- Battle of Walaja - A tactical masterpiece using double envelopment
- Battle of Ullais - Defeated a Persian-Arab coalition
- Capture of Al-Hirah - The Persian client kingdom fell
Within months, Khalid had conquered all of Persian Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq).
🏜️ The Impossible Desert March (634 CE)
When the Muslims in Syria needed reinforcements, Khalid did the unthinkable: he marched his army 800 kilometers across the Syrian Desert in blazing heat with limited water.
Military historians still study this march as one of the most daring tactical maneuvers in history. He arrived in Syria, took the Byzantines by complete surprise, and captured the Ghassanid kingdom.
🕌 Conquest of Syria (634-636 CE)
Khalid became the supreme commander of Muslim forces in Syria. Under his leadership:
- Damascus captured in 634 CE
- Battle of Firaz - Defeated a combined Persian-Byzantine-Christian Arab force
- Battle of Yarmouk (636 CE) - His greatest victory
The Battle of Yarmouk - The Decisive Victory
In August 636 CE, Khalid faced the Byzantine Empire's massive army of 200,000+ soldiers with only 40,000 Muslims.
Over six days of intense fighting, Khalid's tactical genius, combined with the Muslims' unwavering faith, led to a complete and decisive victory. The Byzantine army was shattered, and the entire region of Bilad al-Sham (Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan) fell under Muslim control.
This battle changed the course of history. The Byzantine Empire never recovered, and Islam's expansion became unstoppable.
Dismissal from Command
In 638 CE, Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه relieved Khalid of his command and appointed Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah رضي الله عنه as the supreme commander.
Why Was He Dismissed?
Umar رضي الله عنه feared that people were becoming too attached to Khalid's personality rather than relying on Allah. He wanted to show that victory comes from Allah, not from any individual, no matter how brilliant.
Umar رضي الله عنه said: "I have not dismissed Khalid because of my anger or because of any treachery, but because people glorified him and were misled. I feared that people would rely on him. I want them to know that it is Allah who does all things."
Despite being relieved of supreme command, Khalid accepted the decision with complete submission and humility. He continued to fight under Abu Ubaydah's command without complaint, showing his true character and dedication to Islam over personal glory.
Death of a Warrior
Khalid ibn al-Walid رضي الله عنه passed away in 642 CE in Emesa (Homs), Syria, where he had lived quietly since his dismissal. He died in his bed, not on the battlefield as he had always hoped.
💔 His Final Words
"I fought in so many battles seeking martyrdom that there is no place in my body but has a stabbing scar by a spear, a sword, or a dagger, and yet here I am, dying on my bed like an old camel dies. May the eyes of the cowards never sleep."
These words reveal the heart of a warrior who lived for jihad in the path of Allah and longed to meet his Lord as a martyr on the battlefield.
Upon his death, Khalid رضي الله عنه bequeathed his entire property to Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه and made him the executor of his will and estate — showing no resentment for his dismissal, only love for his Muslim brother.
🕌 His Resting Place
He was buried in Emesa (Homs), Syria. His tomb is now part of the Khalid ibn al-Walid Mosque, where Muslims continue to visit and honor this great hero of Islam.
His tombstone depicts a list of over 50 victorious battles that he commanded without defeat (not including smaller engagements). A testament to a life devoted entirely to the service of Allah and His religion.
