The Night Journey

Isra and Mi'raj - From Earth to the Heavens

Seerah Series - Part 4 of 9

"Glory be to the One who took His servant by night from the Sacred Masjid to the Farthest Masjid, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing."

— Surah Al-Isra 17:1

After the darkest period of his life — the Year of Sorrow, the brutal rejection at Ta'if, and relentless persecution in Makkah — Allah granted His beloved messenger ﷺ the greatest honor any human being has ever received. On one miraculous night, he would journey from Makkah to Jerusalem and then ascend through the seven heavens to the very presence of Allah. This was the Isra and Mi'raj — a journey that would strengthen his heart, elevate his status, and establish one of the five pillars of Islam.

The Opening of the Chest

Before the journey began, the Prophet ﷺ was prepared in a miraculous way. Angel Jibreel came to him as he rested near the Ka'bah, accompanied by another angel. They opened his chest and removed his heart.

💚 The Purification

They brought a golden basin filled with Zamzam water mixed with faith and wisdom. They washed his blessed heart, cleansing it completely, then filled it with iman (faith) and hikmah (wisdom).

This divine purification prepared him to stand in the presence of Allah and witness realities no other human had seen while alive.

🐎

The Journey Begins - Al-Buraq

Jibreel presented to the Prophet ﷺ a magnificent creature called Al-Buraq — a white, winged animal larger than a donkey but smaller than a mule, whose stride reached as far as the eye could see.

✨ Description of Al-Buraq

  • A brilliant white creature of extraordinary beauty
  • Each step carried it as far as the eye could see
  • So swift it could cross vast distances in moments
  • The same creature that had carried prophets before him

The Prophet ﷺ mounted Al-Buraq, and in an instant, they departed from Masjid al-Haram in Makkah toward Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem — a journey of approximately 1,200 kilometers that would normally take over a month, completed in mere moments.

🛤️ Sacred Stops Along the Journey

During the journey, Al-Buraq stopped at significant locations:

  • Yathrib (Madinah) — Where he would later migrate
  • Mount Sinai — Where Musa (Moses) received the Torah
  • Bethlehem — Birthplace of Isa (Jesus)

At each location, Jibreel asked if he wanted to stop and pray. The Prophet ﷺ prayed at each sacred site, connecting the chain of prophethood.

🕌

Leading the Prophets in Prayer

Upon arriving at Masjid al-Aqsa (the Farthest Mosque) in Jerusalem, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was greeted by an extraordinary assembly — all the prophets who had come before him were gathered there, waiting.

👥

The Gathering of Prophets

Present were the greatest messengers of Allah:

Ibrahim عليه السلام

Abraham

Musa عليه السلام

Moses

Isa عليه السلام

Jesus

Adam عليه السلام

Adam

Nuh عليه السلام

Noah

And all others

Peace be upon them

When the time for prayer came, Muhammad ﷺ was asked to lead them all in prayer — a clear sign that he was the final and seal of all prophets, the imam of all messengers.

This moment symbolized the unity of all prophets, all carrying the same message: worship Allah alone. And Muhammad ﷺ, as the last prophet, led them all in submission to the One God.

🌌

Mi'raj - The Ascension Through the Heavens

After leading the prophets in prayer, the Prophet ﷺ was presented with a ladder of light — the Mi'raj — which ascended from earth through the seven heavens to the throne of Allah.

What followed was a journey no other living person had ever experienced — witnessing the unseen realms, meeting the prophets in their heavenly stations, and ultimately standing in the divine presence.

Journey Through the Seven Heavens

Accompanied by Jibreel, the Prophet ﷺ ascended through each of the seven heavens. At each gate, angels asked: "Who is this?" Jibreel would answer: "Muhammad." They would ask: "Has he been called?" He would answer: "Yes." And the gates would open with joy and welcome.

🌟 The First Heaven - Adam عليه السلام

In the first heaven, he met Adam, the father of mankind. Adam welcomed him warmly: "Welcome, O righteous son and righteous prophet!" The Prophet ﷺ saw Adam reviewing the souls of his descendants — some to his right (destined for Paradise), some to his left (destined for Hellfire) — and Adam would laugh when he looked right and weep when he looked left.

🌟 The Second Heaven - Isa & Yahya عليهما السلام

In the second heaven, he met Isa (Jesus) and Yahya (John the Baptist), who were maternal cousins. They greeted him as their brother and welcomed him as a righteous prophet.

🌟 The Third Heaven - Yusuf عليه السلام

In the third heaven, he met Yusuf (Joseph). The Prophet ﷺ described him as being given half of all beauty — such was his extraordinary handsomeness that the Prophet marveled at his appearance.

🌟 The Fourth Heaven - Idris عليه السلام

In the fourth heaven, he met Idris (Enoch), whom Allah mentions in the Quran: "And We raised him to a high station." (Surah Maryam 19:57)

🌟 The Fifth Heaven - Harun عليه السلام

In the fifth heaven, he met Harun (Aaron), the brother of Musa, who was beloved by his people and known for his eloquent speech.

🌟 The Sixth Heaven - Musa عليه السلام

In the sixth heaven, he met Musa (Moses). When the Prophet ﷺ passed by him to ascend higher, Musa wept.

When asked why he wept, Musa said: "I weep because a young man sent after me will have more of his Ummah enter Paradise than my Ummah." This was both grief at losing that honor and joy at Muhammad's ﷺ success.

🌟 The Seventh Heaven - Ibrahim عليه السلام

In the seventh and highest heaven, he met Ibrahim (Abraham), his forefather, reclining against Bayt al-Ma'mur — the heavenly Ka'bah, which is visited daily by 70,000 angels who never return to it.

Ibrahim welcomed his descendant: "Welcome, O righteous son and righteous prophet!" The Prophet ﷺ later said that he resembled Ibrahim more than any other prophet.

🌺

Witnessing Paradise and Hellfire

During this miraculous journey, the Prophet ﷺ was shown both Jannah (Paradise) and Jahannam (Hellfire), witnessing their realities with his own eyes.

🌟 Paradise - Al-Jannah

He described Paradise as having:

  • Rivers of water that never changes, rivers of milk with unchanging taste
  • Rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of pure honey
  • Palaces of gold and silver, gardens beneath which rivers flow
  • Soil of musk, pebbles of pearls and rubies
  • A beauty beyond imagination, a bliss without end

He later said: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has conceived what Allah has prepared for the righteous."

🔥 Hellfire - Jahannam

He also witnessed the reality of Hellfire and saw the punishments awaiting those who disobeyed Allah — those who consumed usury, committed zina (adultery), backbit others, abandoned prayer, and persisted in major sins. This vision affected him deeply and drove him to warn his Ummah with even greater urgency about the consequences of sin.

Beyond the Seventh Heaven - Sidrat al-Muntaha

After the seventh heaven, the Prophet ﷺ was taken to Sidrat al-Muntaha — the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary, beyond which no creation, not even Jibreel, could pass.

The Lote Tree was so magnificent that the Prophet ﷺ said: "No one can describe its beauty." Its leaves were like elephant ears, its fruits like large jars, and four rivers flowed from its base.

Here, Jibreel stopped. He said: "If I go one step further, I will burn. But you, O Muhammad, proceed."

The Prophet ﷺ continued alone into the divine presence — a place no other creation has reached.

🙏

The Gift of the Five Daily Prayers

In the divine presence, Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ that his Ummah must perform fifty prayers every day.

The Mercy of Reduction

As the Prophet ﷺ descended, he passed by Musa in the sixth heaven. Musa asked: "What did Allah command your Ummah?"

The Prophet ﷺ replied: "Fifty prayers."

Musa, who had experience with leading people, advised: "Go back to your Lord and ask for reduction. I tested the Children of Israel with less than this, and they could not do it. Your Ummah is weaker than them."

The Prophet ﷺ returned to Allah and asked for a reduction. Allah reduced it to forty-five. He descended again, and Musa sent him back. This continued — ten times the Prophet ﷺ went back and forth — until the prayers were reduced to five daily prayers.

Musa urged him to ask for further reduction, but the Prophet ﷺ said: "I have returned to my Lord again and again until I am ashamed. I am content with this."

The Divine Proclamation

Then Allah declared:

"They are five in practice, but fifty in reward. Each good deed is multiplied by ten."

And this is why Salah — the five daily prayers — is the only pillar of Islam that was ordained directly in the heavens, not through revelation on earth. It is the gift from Allah's own presence, and the direct link between the believer and the Creator.

The Return to Makkah

After this extraordinary journey through the heavens, the Prophet ﷺ returned the same way he had come — from the divine presence, through the seven heavens, back to Jerusalem, and then to Makkah on Al-Buraq.

When he awoke, he found himself back in his bed in Makkah. The entire journey — from Makkah to Jerusalem to the seven heavens and back — had taken place in a single night. His bed was still warm.

🌄 The Morning After - A Test of Faith

The next morning, the Prophet ﷺ told the Quraysh about his journey. Their reaction was immediate mockery and disbelief:

"You claim you traveled to Jerusalem and back in one night? It takes us a month to get there!"

Some even went to Abu Bakr to test his reaction. When they told him what Muhammad ﷺ claimed, Abu Bakr responded without hesitation:

"If he said it, then it is true. I believe him in matters greater than this — I believe he receives revelation from the heavens!"

From that day forward, Abu Bakr was known as As-Siddiq — The Truthful One, who confirmed the truth immediately.

To prove his journey, the Prophet ﷺ described Jerusalem in exact detail — its buildings, gates, and surroundings — despite never having been there before with his physical eyes. Those who had traveled to Jerusalem confirmed: "His description is perfect."

💡

Lessons from the Night Journey

1. After Hardship Comes Ease

This miracle came right after the Year of Sorrow and Ta'if. When life is darkest, Allah's help is nearest. The night journey reminded the Prophet ﷺ — and us — that trials are temporary, but Allah's mercy is eternal.

2. Salah is a Divine Gift

Prayer was not sent down through an angel — it was given directly by Allah in His presence. This shows the supreme importance of Salah. It is our Mi'raj — our spiritual ascension five times a day.

3. All Prophets Preached the Same Message

The gathering of all prophets in Jerusalem shows the continuity of the message. From Adam to Muhammad ﷺ, all called to the worship of One God. Islam is not a new religion — it's the completion of the original message.

4. Faith Means Trusting Beyond Understanding

Abu Bakr's immediate belief in the impossible journey earned him the title As-Siddiq. True faith doesn't wait for proof — it trusts Allah and His messenger even when logic fails.

5. The Reality of the Hereafter

Seeing Paradise and Hellfire with his own eyes made the Prophet ﷺ certain of the Hereafter. His mission intensified after this journey because he had witnessed what awaits humanity. This should motivate us to prepare for our eternal destination.

📚

The Journey Continues

Strengthened by this divine experience, the Prophet ﷺ continued his mission with renewed vigor. But Makkah remained hostile, and the persecution intensified. Soon, Allah would command him to make another journey — one that would change the course of Islamic history forever: the Hijrah, the migration to Madinah.

Coming Next: "The Hijrah - Migration to Madinah"

Glory be to the One who took His servant on the Night Journey ﷺ

May Allah grant us the blessing of establishing Salah and the honor of reaching Paradise. Ameen.
