Juwayriyya bint al-Harith رضي الله عنها
A Marriage that Brought Freedom and Honour to an Entire Tribe
"I know of no woman who was more of a blessing to her people than Juwayriyya bint al-Harith."
— Aisha (RA)
🌿 From Captivity to Honour
Juwayriyya bint al-Harith (RA) was the daughter of the chief of the Banu Mustaliq. After the Muslims' campaign against her tribe, she was taken captive, fearing an exorbitant ransom would be demanded for her release. She sought to see the Prophet ﷺ, hoping he would help her. When she was brought before him, he asked: "Shall I tell you what would be better than this?" — and proposed marriage to her. She accepted immediately.
The Prophet ﷺ was thinking far beyond her personal situation. By marrying Juwayriyya, the entire Banu Mustaliq tribe became connected to the Prophet ﷺ by marriage — and as soon as the marriage was announced, all the captives taken from her tribe were freed, and all the booty was returned. A potential cycle of vengeance was ended through one act of honour. After the marriage, the Prophet ﷺ changed her name from Barra to Juwayriyya.
The Power of Four Phrases: One morning the Prophet ﷺ left Juwayriyya's room while she was doing the dawn prayer and returned later to find her still sitting there in remembrance. He told her: "I recited four phrases three times after I left you, and if these were weighed against everything you have recited since dawn, they would still outweigh them: 'Glory be to Allah and Praise be to Him, as much as the number of His creations, and His pleasure, and the weight of His Throne, and the ink of His words.'"
🕊️ Her Life
Juwayriyya (RA) was married to the Prophet ﷺ for six years, and lived for another thirty-nine years after his death, passing away in 50 AH at the age of sixty-five. Her marriage stands as one of the clearest examples of how the Prophet ﷺ turned moments of conflict into lasting peace and honour for those involved.
May Allah be pleased with Juwayriyya bint al-Harith — through whose marriage an entire tribe found honour, freedom, and a new bond with the family of the Prophet ﷺ.
