Maria al-Qibtiyya رضي الله عنها

Mother of Ibrahim — A Gift That Became a Lasting Bond

"The sun and the moon are two of Allah's signs — they are not eclipsed because of anyone's birth or death. When you see these signs, make haste to remember Allah in prayer."

— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, after the death of his son Ibrahim

🌿 A Gift from Egypt

Maria al-Qibtiyya (RA) was born in Upper Egypt to a Coptic father and Greek mother. When the Muqawqis, ruler of Egypt, received the Prophet's ﷺ letter inviting him to Islam, he sent gifts in response — including Maria and her sister. The Prophet ﷺ accepted Maria into his household, and everyone gave her the same title of respect given to the Prophet's wives — Umm al-Mumineen, Mother of the Believers.

In 9 AH, Maria gave birth to a son — the Prophet's ﷺ only son to be born during the years of his prophethood. He named him Ibrahim, after the great patriarch from whom all the prophets after him descended.

💔 The Loss of Ibrahim

When Ibrahim was only eighteen months old, he became seriously ill and passed away. Even knowing his small son would enter the Garden, the Prophet ﷺ could not help shedding tears. When his companions asked why he wept, he replied simply: "It is my humanness."

As Ibrahim's body was being buried, a solar eclipse occurred. Some people connected the two events, but the Prophet ﷺ clarified immediately that the sun and moon are signs of Allah unrelated to any person's birth or death — and that when such signs appear, believers should hasten to remember Allah in prayer. Although the disbelievers mocked the Prophet ﷺ for having no surviving sons, calling him "cut off," Allah revealed Surah Al-Kawthar in response, affirming that it is the mockers who are truly cut off.

"Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets, and Allah has knowledge of all things." — Surah Al-Ahzab 33:40. This verse, revealed in this period, established for all time that the Prophet's ﷺ greatness lies in his prophethood, not in worldly lineage.

🕊️ Her Final Years

Maria (RA) was honoured and respected by the Prophet ﷺ and his family. She spent three years with him until his death, and for the final five years of her own life remained largely in seclusion, going out mainly to visit the grave of the Prophet ﷺ or the grave of her son. She passed away in 16 AH, and Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) led her funeral prayer.

May Allah be pleased with Maria al-Qibtiyya — mother of Ibrahim, whose presence in the Prophet's ﷺ household connected Egypt to the family of the final Messenger.
