Safiyya bint Huyayy رضي الله عنها

Daughter of a Prophet's Line — A Heart That Found Its Way to Islam

"You are certainly the daughter of a Prophet, your uncle was a Prophet, and you are the wife of a Prophet — so what is there in that to be scornful towards you?"

— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, defending Safiyya (RA)

🌿 From the Lineage of Harun (AS)

Safiyya bint Huyayy (RA) could trace her lineage directly back to Harun (AS), the brother of Prophet Musa (AS). Her father Huyayy was the chief of the Banu Nadir — a Jewish tribe that had been expelled from Madinah after plotting against the Prophet ﷺ. After the Battle of Khaybar, where her husband was killed, Safiyya (RA) was brought before the Prophet ﷺ. He placed his own cloak over her shoulders — a gesture of honour and protection — and when Bilal (RA) was found to have led her past the slain men of her tribe, the Prophet ﷺ rebuked him gently: "Bilal, has Allah plucked mercy from your heart?"

The Prophet ﷺ invited her to Islam, which she accepted, freed her, and then married her.

💛

Why Did She Accept? Safiyya (RA) later recalled how her father had recognised the Prophet ﷺ from prophecies in the Torah, but rejected him out of pride and a desire to keep his position of power. Yet Safiyya — descended from Harun (AS) and related to Musa (AS) — had a pure heart, and as soon as the chance arose to follow the final Messenger ﷺ, she took it without hesitation.

💚 Her Patience and Her Devotion

Safiyya (RA) was not always warmly received by some of the Prophet's other wives because of her background. Once when Hafsa (RA) called her "the daughter of a Jew," the Prophet ﷺ comforted her with the words above and corrected Hafsa directly. On another occasion, when Zaynab bint Jahsh (RA) refused to lend Safiyya a camel calling her "that Jewess," the Prophet ﷺ stayed away from Zaynab in disapproval for months.

During the Prophet's ﷺ final illness, Safiyya (RA) said with deep sincerity: "O Messenger of Allah, I wish it was I who was suffering instead of you." Some of the other wives exchanged glances, thinking she did not mean it. The Prophet ﷺ, defending her, said firmly: "By Allah, she spoke the truth!"

After the Prophet's ﷺ death, when a slave-girl falsely accused her of loving the Sabbath and keeping ties with the Jews, Safiyya (RA) calmly explained: "I have not loved the Sabbath since Allah replaced it with Friday for me, and I only maintain ties with those Jews to whom I am related by kinship." She then freed the slave-girl who had lied about her. Safiyya (RA) was with the Prophet ﷺ for nearly four years and died in 50 AH at the age of sixty.

May Allah be pleased with Safiyya bint Huyayy — descendant of prophets, whose journey to Islam shows that Allah guides whomsoever He wills, regardless of where they come from.
