Keeping Promises

Lesson 6—"And fulfil every promise, for every promise will be questioned about."

The Boy and the Broken Promise

There was a boy named Zaid who loved to play football after school. One rainy afternoon, his mother asked him to help carry groceries from the car. Zaid sighed and said, "I promise, Mama—as soon as the rain stops, I will help."

The rain stopped. The sun came out. Zaid's friends called him to the field. He ran out the door, forgetting his promise entirely.

That evening, his mother sat beside him and said gently, "My son, do you know what the Prophet ﷺ said about promises?" She opened a small book and read: "The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is trusted, he betrays that trust." (Bukhari, Muslim)

Zaid's eyes grew wide. "But Mama, I am not a hypocrite!" His mother smiled. "Of course you are not. But the Prophet ﷺ warned us so that we would guard our words carefully. A Muslim's promise is like a rope tied to their honor. When you break it, the rope frays. When you keep it, it grows stronger."

From that day, Zaid learned to think before he promised. And when he did promise, he kept it—no matter what.

Why Keeping Promises Matters

  • It is a command from Allah. The Qur'an tells us to fulfil every promise, because we will be asked about it.
  • It builds trust. When children learn to keep their word, parents, teachers, and friends know they can be relied upon.
  • It shapes character. A child who keeps small promises grows into an adult who keeps big ones.
  • It pleases Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said the best of people are those who are best in character—and keeping your word is the foundation of good character.

Try This at Home

This week's family challenge: The "Promise Jar." Each family member writes one small promise on a slip of paper and places it in a jar. At the end of the week, gather together and share which promises you kept. Celebrate the ones kept, and gently discuss how to fix the ones broken—without shame, only learning.

Tip for parents: Do not make promises to your children that you cannot keep. If you say, "We will go to the park tomorrow," go. Children learn integrity by watching it. If circumstances change, explain honestly: "I am sorry, something came up. Let me make it up to you on Saturday." This teaches them that honoring your word matters, even when plans change.

O Allah, make us people of truth whose words match our actions. Let our promises be bonds of honour, and let our children grow into adults the world can trust. Ameen.
