Sent to the People of 'Ad โ€” A Warning Against Arrogance and Pride

"And to 'Ad people We sent their brother Hud. He said: O my people! Worship Allah! You have no other god but Him."

โ€” Surah Hud 11:50

๐Ÿ›๏ธ The People of 'Ad

The people of 'Ad lived in the windswept hills between Yemen and Oman. They were physically powerful and renowned for their craftsmanship โ€” particularly in the construction of tall buildings with lofty towers. They were outstanding among all nations in power and wealth, and it was this very strength that became their downfall. It made them arrogant, boastful, and unjust. Political power was held in the hands of tyrants whom no one dared to challenge.

They were not entirely ignorant of Allah โ€” what they refused was to worship Allah alone. They worshipped other gods and idols alongside Him. And this โ€” associating partners with Allah โ€” is the one sin Allah does not forgive without repentance.

๐ŸŒฟ Prophet Hud (AS) โ€” Sent from Among Them

Allah, in His infinite mercy, did not leave this people without guidance. He sent a prophet from among them โ€” someone they knew, someone they could not accuse of being a stranger. This prophet was Hud (AS), a noble man who carried out his mission with great resoluteness and patience.

Hud (AS) condemned idol worship and addressed his people directly: "My people, what is the benefit of these stones that you carve with your own hands and worship? In reality it is an insult to the intellect. There is only One worthy of worship and that is Allah. He created you, He provides for you, and He is the One Who will cause you to die. He gave you wonderful physiques and blessed you in many ways. So believe in Him โ€” or the same fate that destroyed the people of Nuh will overtake you."

"O my people I ask of you no reward for it. My reward is only from Him Who created me. Will you not then understand? And O my people! Ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him, He will send you abundant rain, and add strength to your strength โ€” so do not turn away as criminals."

โ€” Surah Hud 11:51-52

โŒ Their Rejection and Arrogance

The people refused to accept his message. They accused him of wanting to be their master and questioned what reward he sought. When he explained he sought nothing but their guidance, they mocked him further โ€” claiming that their gods had afflicted him with madness.

They questioned the Day of Judgement, laughing at the idea of being resurrected from dust. "How strange Hud's claims are!" they muttered. Yet Hud (AS) patiently explained that justice itself demands a Day of Reckoning โ€” for good is not always victorious in this life, and evil cannot go forever unpunished. Allah has forbidden injustice upon Himself and upon His creation. Therefore the Day of Judgement is not strange โ€” it is the logical completion of divine justice.

As years passed, the people became prouder, more obstinate, more tyrannical. Hud (AS) stood firm and continued his mission regardless.

๐Ÿ’›

Hud's Declaration of Trust: When his people plotted against him, Hud (AS) responded with complete reliance on Allah: "I put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord! There is not a moving creature but He has grasp of its forelock. Verily, my Lord is on the Straight Path." (Surah Hud 11:56) โ€” a beautiful declaration of tawakkul that every believer can draw strength from.

โšก The Punishment of the Wind

A severe drought descended upon the land. The sky withheld its rain, the sun scorched the desert sands, and plants began to die. Hud (AS) told them this was Allah's anger โ€” if they believed, the rain would return. They mocked him further.

One day, dark clouds appeared on the horizon and the people of 'Ad cheered โ€” finally, rain! But what came was not rain. The weather changed suddenly from burning heat to a piercing cold wind that shook everything โ€” trees, plants, tents, men and women. The wind grew stronger day after day and night after night, for seven nights and eight days. It ripped tents from their stakes, tore away clothing, slashed skin, and destroyed everything it touched.

"And as for 'Ad, they were destroyed by a furious violent wind which Allah imposed on them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so that you could see men lying overthrown as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees!"

โ€” Surah Al-Haqqah 69:6-7

The entire region was reduced to ruins. The wicked people were destroyed, swallowed by the sands of the desert. Only Hud (AS) and his followers remained unharmed. They migrated to Hadramaut and lived there in peace, worshipping Allah alone.

The story of 'Ad is a timeless reminder that power, wealth, and pride are nothing before Allah. May Allah protect us from arrogance and keep our hearts humble and grateful.
