Prophet Salih ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู…

Sent to the People of Thamud โ€” The Story of the She-Camel of Allah

"This she-camel of Allah is a sign to you โ€” leave her to feed on Allah's earth, and touch her not with evil, lest a near torment will seize you."

โ€” Prophet Salih (AS) โ€” Surah Hud 11:64

๐Ÿ›๏ธ The People of Thamud

After the destruction of the people of 'Ad, the tribe of Thamud rose to succeed them in power and glory. Like their predecessors, they too fell into idol worship. As their material wealth grew, their evil ways increased and their virtue decreased. They erected magnificent buildings on the plains and carved beautiful homes into the mountains. Tyranny and oppression became widespread as corrupt men ruled the land.

The pattern was repeating itself โ€” prosperity, arrogance, corruption, and the desperate need for divine guidance.

๐ŸŒฟ Prophet Salih (AS) โ€” A Man of Wisdom and Purity

Allah sent unto them His Prophet Salih (AS), a man from among them โ€” known for his wisdom, purity and goodness, and greatly respected by his people long before revelation came to him. When he called them to worship Allah alone and abandon their idols, they were surprised and saddened. They had hoped he would be their great leader โ€” but not in this direction.

They said: "O Salih! You have been among us as a figure of good hope and we wished for you to be our chief โ€” until this new thing which you have brought, that we leave our gods and worship your God alone! But we are in grave doubt as to that which you invite us."

They wanted to worship as their fathers had โ€” without reason, without proof, without reflection. The evidence of Salih's truth was clear, yet most refused to believe.

โœจ The Miracle of the She-Camel

Fearing that his followers would grow, the disbelievers tried to challenge Salih (AS) with an impossible demand โ€” let a unique, ten-month pregnant she-camel emerge from the solid rock of the mountain. Salih (AS) took their vow: if he produced this sign, would they believe? They agreed. He prayed to Allah, and Allah answered.

The mountain split open. A magnificent, heavily pregnant she-camel stepped forth โ€” followed by her young offspring. The people were stunned. They had seen something extraordinary, a clear and undeniable miracle. Many believed. Yet the majority, despite witnessing this with their own eyes, continued in their stubborn disbelief.

The she-camel was miraculous in every way โ€” her milk was sufficient for thousands; on the days she drank from the wells, no other animal could approach the water; wherever she slept, other animals kept their distance. She was not an ordinary camel โ€” she was a sign from Allah, walking among them.

๐Ÿ’›

A Sign Ignored: The people of Thamud witnessed a miracle that left no room for doubt โ€” a camel emerging from solid rock. Yet they still chose disbelief. This teaches us that signs alone do not create faith. Faith requires an open heart willing to submit to the truth.

โš”๏ธ The Killing of the She-Camel

The disbelievers began to resent the she-camel, claiming she drank too much of their water and frightened their livestock. They plotted to kill her and recruited young men with promises of women and wealth. Two men โ€” Masari and Qudar โ€” were chosen. They waited, watched her movements carefully, and struck.

As she came to drink at the well, Masari shot her in the leg with an arrow. As she stumbled, Qudar finished the deed with his sword. The killers were given a hero's welcome โ€” cheered with songs and poetry. In their arrogance, they mocked Salih (AS).

Salih (AS) warned them gravely: "Enjoy life for three more days โ€” then the punishment will descend upon you." He hoped they would repent. Instead, they asked him to hasten the punishment.

โšก The Punishment

Three days after Salih's warning, thunderbolts filled the air followed by a violent earthquake. The land was shaken with tremendous force. A single terrific cry โ€” the Sayhah โ€” rang out and barely ended before every disbeliever was struck dead simultaneously. Not one remained. Their magnificent buildings and rock-hewn homes, which they had trusted to protect them, offered no protection whatsoever.

"So the earthquakes seized them and they lay dead, prostrate in their homes. Then he turned from them and said: 'O my people! I have indeed conveyed the Message of my Lord, and have given you good advice โ€” but you like not good advisers.'"

โ€” Surah Al-A'raf 7:78-79

As for the believers โ€” they had already left the land with Salih (AS) and were saved. The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ himself, passing by the ruins of Thamud on the way to Tabuk, warned his companions not to enter those ruins without weeping โ€” lest they be struck by what had afflicted them.

Ibn Umar (RA) narrated: "The Prophet ๏ทบ ordered them to empty the water drawn from the wells of Thamud and to discard the dough made with it. Then he said: 'I fear that you may be affected by what afflicted them โ€” so do not enter upon them.'"

The story of Thamud teaches us that when Allah's signs are denied after they have been clearly shown, the consequences are severe. May Allah grant us hearts that recognize and honor His signs and keep us among the grateful and the believing.
