Table Manners
Lesson 4—Eating with the right hand, sitting together, and thanking Allah
The Prophet's ﷺ Simple Meal
One evening, the Prophet ﷺ sat on the floor with his companions. In front of him was a simple plate of dates and a cup of water. Before taking a single date, he raised his right hand and said softly, "Bismillah."
He ate slowly, chewing each bite with gratitude. He did not lean back lazily, nor did he criticise the food. When he finished, he licked his fingers gently — not wasting even a crumb — and said, "Alhamdulillah hilladhi at'amana wa saqana wa ja'alana minal muslimeen."
A young companion named Jabir later described how the Prophet ﷺ taught them: "Eat with your right hand, and eat from what is directly in front of you." (Bukhari, Muslim)
The Prophet ﷺ also said: "The blessing of food is in washing the hands before and after eating." (Tirmidhi)
Why Table Manners Matter
- It follows the Sunnah. Every small act — the right hand, the du'a, the posture — is an act of worship when done intentionally.
- It teaches gratitude. Saying Alhamdulillah after eating reminds us that millions do not have what we take for granted.
- It builds family bonds. Eating together without phones or distractions creates conversations that last a lifetime.
- It prevents waste. The Prophet ﷺ never criticised food, and he taught us to finish what is on our plate.
Try This at Home
This week's family challenge: Make one meal each day a "Sunnah Meal." Everyone sits together on the floor (or at the table), eats with their right hand, says Bismillah aloud, and finishes with Alhamdulillah together. Take a photo on the last day and celebrate!
Tip for parents: Do not scold children for mess. Instead, praise the effort: "MashaAllah, I noticed you said Bismillah before drinking your juice today." Positive reinforcement builds habits faster than correction.
