Prophet Ismail (Ishmael) ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู…

The First-Born Son of Ibrahim (AS)โ€”Builder of the Ka'bah and Father of an Honoured Nation

"O our Lord! Accept this service from us. Verily, You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower."

โ€” Ibrahim and Ismail (AS), while building the Ka'bah โ€” Surah Al-Baqarah 2:127

๐ŸŒฟ Left in the Barren Valley

One day, Ibrahim (AS) woke up and began a long journey with his wife Hajar and their infant son Ismail. He walked through cultivated land, desert, and mountains until he reached the desert of the Arabian Peninsula โ€” an uncultivated valley with no fruit, no trees, no food, and no water. Not a sign of life anywhere.

After helping them dismount, Ibrahim (AS) left them with a small amount of food and water โ€” barely enough for two days โ€” and turned to walk away. Hajar hurried after him: "Where are you going, Abraham, leaving us in this barren valley?" He did not answer. She called again. He remained silent. Then she understood โ€” this was not his own decision. She asked: "Did Allah command you to do so?" He replied: "Yes."

Her response has echoed through history: "We are not going to be lost, since Allah Who has commanded you is with us." Then Ibrahim (AS) walked away, and when he reached a point where they could no longer see him, he raised his hands and made one of the most beautiful supplications in the Quran:

"O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell in a valley with no cultivation, by Your Sacred House โ€” in order, O our Lord, that they may offer prayers perfectly. So fill some hearts among men with love towards them, and provide them with fruits, so that they may give thanks."

โ€” Surah Ibrahim 14:37

๐Ÿ’ง The Origin of Zamzam and the Sa'y

When their water ran out, Hajar became desperate. She could not bear to watch baby Ismail suffering from thirst. She climbed Mount As-Safa and scanned the valley for any sign of life. Nothing. She descended, ran across the valley in distress and climbed Mount Al-Marwa. She ran between these two mountains seven times โ€” and this is the origin of the Sa'y performed during Hajj and Umrah to this day.

On her final run, she heard a voice. She called back: "O whoever you may be! You have made me hear your voice โ€” have you got something to help me?" And there she saw the Angel Jibreel (AS), striking the earth with his heel โ€” and water burst forth. This was the blessed well of Zamzam.

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "May Allah bestow mercy on Ismail's mother! Had she let the Zamzam flow without trying to control it, it would have been a stream flowing on the surface of the earth." The angel told her: "Don't be afraid โ€” this is the House of Allah which will be built by this boy and his father, and Allah never neglects His people."

The Tribe of Jurhum: Birds circling above Zamzam attracted the tribe of Jurhum passing nearby. Knowing birds only circle where water exists, they sent a scout โ€” who found the spring and Hajar. They asked permission to settle there. She agreed, on the condition they would not own the water. Young Ismail grew up speaking Arabic, learned from them, and eventually married a woman from their tribe. From this blessed lineage, the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ was born generations later.

๐Ÿšถ Ibrahim's Visits and the Message of the Threshold

Ibrahim (AS) visited his son after a long absence. Finding Ismail away, he spoke with his wife. When she complained of hardship and misery, Ibrahim told her: "When your husband returns, give him my salutations and tell him to change the threshold of the gate." When Ismail heard this, he understood immediately: his father had tested his wife and found her ungrateful. He divorced her.

On his next visit, he found Ismail's second wife โ€” a woman who spoke with contentment and gratitude. This time, Ibrahim left a different message: "Tell him to keep firm the threshold of his gate." When Ismail heard, he smiled: "It was my father, and you are the threshold. He has ordered me to keep you with me."

These two threshold stories are among the most profound pieces of parental wisdom in Islamic tradition โ€” teaching us that the character of one's spouse shapes the foundation of one's home.

๐Ÿ•‹ Building the Ka'bah Together

On one of his visits, Ibrahim (AS) found Ismail near the Zamzam well, sharpening his arrows. When Ibrahim (AS) gave him the glad tidings that Allah had commanded them to build a house, Ismail replied without hesitation: "Do what your Lord has ordered you to do โ€” I will help you."

Father and son raised the foundations of the Ka'bah โ€” Ismail carrying the stones while Ibrahim (AS) built. When the walls grew too high for Ibrahim (AS) to lift the stones, he stood on the stone of Al-Maqam while Ismail continued to hand him the stones. All the while, both repeated the same prayer:

"Our Lord! Accept this service from us. Verily, You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower."

The Ka'bah that stands in Makkah today โ€” visited by millions each year โ€” is the same house that these two prophets, father and son, raised with their own hands in the desert, calling upon their Lord with every stone.

โญ The Great Sacrifice

Allah tested Ibrahim (AS) with what was perhaps the greatest test any father has ever faced โ€” the command to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail (AS). Ibrahim (AS) told his son what he had seen in his dream. The response of Ismail (AS) stands as one of the finest expressions of submission in the Quran:

"O my father! Do that which you are commanded. In sha Allah, you shall find me among the patient."

โ€” Surah As-Saffat 37:102

Both submitted completely to the will of Allah. As Ibrahim (AS) laid his son down and prepared to carry out the command, Allah called out: "O Ibrahim! You have fulfilled the dream!" He had passed the test. A great ram was sent in Ismail's place as a ransom. This is the origin of the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha โ€” one of the most beloved acts of worship in Islam.

May Allah be pleased with Prophet Ismail (AS)โ€”the patient son, the loyal builder, and the ancestor of the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ. May we inherit a fraction of his submission, his patience, and his complete trust in Allah.
