The Most Beloved — "A Part of Me"
Fatimah al-Zahra (RA) was the youngest of the Prophet's ﷺ daughters and by all accounts the most beloved to him. She resembled him most closely in character, conduct and even in her manner of walking — so much so that Aisha (RA) said: "I have not seen anyone more similar to the Prophet ﷺ in speech, conduct and manner of sitting and standing than Fatimah."
The Prophet ﷺ expressed his love for her openly and without reservation. Whenever she entered his presence, he would stand, take her by the hand, kiss her, and seat her in his own place. And whenever he departed on a journey, she was the last person he would bid farewell to. When he returned, she was the first he would visit.
He said: "Fatimah is a part of me. Whoever angers her, angers me." (Sahih al-Bukhari)
💡 Did You Know? Fatimah (RA) is known as Ummu Abiha — "The Mother of her Father." This title was given to her because of the extraordinary tenderness and care with which she looked after the Prophet ﷺ, especially during the years when he was persecuted in Makkah. She would clean the filth that the enemies of Islam threw on him, tend to his wounds, and weep for him. Her love for her father was as deep as a mother's love for her child.
Her Childhood During the Years of Persecution
Fatimah (RA) was a young child when revelation came to her father. She grew up witnessing the most intense years of persecution against the early Muslims in Makkah. She saw the Quraysh throw filth on her father, mock and abuse him, and plot against his life. She saw her mother Khadijah (RA) pour every resource she had into supporting the Prophet ﷺ.
Rather than being broken by this, Fatimah (RA) was forged by it. Her faith and her love for her father only deepened under pressure. She became his devoted companion, supporter and comforter through the most difficult years of his life.
Her Marriage to Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA)
Several Companions had sought the hand of Fatimah (RA), including Abu Bakr (RA) and Umar (RA). The Prophet ﷺ gently declined each proposal, saying that he was waiting for the Divine decree regarding her marriage.
When Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) — who had grown up in the Prophet's ﷺ own household and was among the earliest believers — came forward, the Prophet ﷺ accepted. Ali's only worldly possession at the time was his shield. He sold it to provide the mahr (dowry), and the wedding was conducted with beautiful simplicity.
Their marriage became one of the most blessed in Islamic history — producing the Prophet's ﷺ beloved grandsons Hasan and Husayn (RA), who are described in hadith as "the leaders of the youth of Paradise."
💡 Did You Know? Fatimah (RA) and Ali (RA) lived in great simplicity. She would grind grain by hand until her hands blistered, and carry water until marks appeared on her neck. The Prophet ﷺ visited and found them both tired and in need. Rather than giving them a servant, he taught them the Tasbih of Fatimah — SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, Allahu Akbar 34 times — saying this was better for them than a servant. This dhikr is recited by Muslims every night to this day.
Her Position Among the Greatest Women
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of the women of the people of Paradise are Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, Fatimah bint Muhammad, Maryam bint Imran, and Asiyah bint Muzahim." (Ahmad)
He also said: "Fatimah is the leader of the women of the people of Paradise." (Sahih al-Bukhari) — a station uniquely and eternally hers.
She combined in her character the qualities of her mother Khadijah (RA) — generosity, courage and profound devotion — with the light of prophethood she had been raised in. She was learned, pious, patient, charitable and utterly sincere in her worship of Allah.
Her Final Days and Passing
When the Prophet ﷺ fell ill with his final illness, Fatimah (RA) was by his side constantly. Seeing his weakness, she wept. He whispered something to her — and she wept more. Then he whispered again — and she smiled. Aisha (RA) later asked her what he had said. Fatimah (RA) replied:
"The first time he told me that he would die from this illness — and I wept. Then he told me that I would be the first of his family to follow him — and I smiled."
The Prophet ﷺ passed away. And approximately six months later — some narrations say as few as seventy-five days — Fatimah al-Zahra (RA) passed away, joining her beloved father. She was the first of the Prophet's ﷺ household to follow him into the next world — exactly as he had told her.
She passed away at approximately twenty-seven years of age, having lived an entire lifetime of meaning, sacrifice and love in the short years she was given.
🌿 Lessons from Fatimah al-Zahra (RA)
- Honour before Allah comes from righteousness alone — not wealth, status or even family name
- True love gives — Fatimah (RA) would give her last food to those in need and herself go hungry
- Simplicity in this world is not poverty — it is a choice made by those whose eyes are fixed on the Hereafter
- The Tasbih of Fatimah is a gift to every Muslim — more valuable than any worldly treasure
- A daughter who loves her father purely and sincerely has a station of honour with Allah
- The greatest among us are often those who live the quietest lives — their greatness known to Allah
A Father's Love — A Prophet's Grief
It is one of the most profound and moving realities of the Prophet's ﷺ life that he outlived three of his four daughters. He buried Zaynab, Ruqayyah and Umm Kulthum (RA) with his own hands, weeping each time. He bore this grief with patience and submission to the Will of Allah — never questioning, always praising his Lord even in the deepest sorrow.
And in his final days, it was Fatimah (RA) who sat with him, held his hand, and wept at the thought of losing him. She smiled only when he told her she would follow him soon.
These four women — Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthum and Fatimah — are among the most honoured souls in all of creation. They lived by the light of prophethood, they sacrificed everything for the sake of Allah, and they showed the world what it means to be a Muslim woman of the highest character.
