Her Life and Marriage
Zaynab (RA) was the eldest of the Prophet's ﷺ daughters and among the most beloved to him. She was married to her maternal cousin Abu al-As ibn al-Rabi — a marriage that had taken place before the revelation of Islam. Abu al-As was a noble and respected man of Makkah, and their marriage was a happy one.
When the Prophet ﷺ received revelation and began calling people to Islam, Zaynab (RA) embraced the faith immediately and wholeheartedly. Her husband Abu al-As, however, remained attached to the religion of his forefathers and did not accept Islam at that time. This created a deeply painful situation — a believing wife separated from her non-Muslim husband by the new divine law that a Muslim woman may not remain in marriage to a non-believer.
Despite this, the Prophet ﷺ respected Abu al-As highly, describing him as an honest and trustworthy man. The couple were separated — with Zaynab (RA) remaining with her father in Makkah while Abu al-As stayed among the Quraysh.
💡 Did You Know? At the Battle of Badr, Abu al-As fought on the side of the Quraysh and was taken prisoner by the Muslims. Zaynab (RA) sent a necklace to ransom him — the very necklace that Khadijah (RA) had given her as a wedding gift. When the Prophet ﷺ saw it, he wept. He turned to his Companions and said: "If you see fit to release her prisoner and return her property to her, do so." They agreed immediately, and Abu al-As was freed on the condition that he would allow Zaynab (RA) to migrate to Madinah.
Her Hijrah and Injury
When Zaynab (RA) set out to migrate to Madinah, a group of Quraysh men pursued her. In the chaos, she fell from her riding animal and was seriously injured — some narrations mention that she suffered a miscarriage as a result. She eventually arrived in Madinah, but her health never fully recovered.
Years later, Abu al-As embraced Islam sincerely and came to Madinah. The Prophet ﷺ reunited them, and they were together again — this time both under the banner of Islam.
Zaynab (RA) passed away in 8 AH at a relatively young age, her health weakened by the injuries of her migration. The Prophet ﷺ wept deeply at her death and personally helped to prepare her for burial — a testament to how deeply he loved her.
