📖 Reconnecting with the Qur'an
Returning to the Book of Allah
The Qur'an is not only a book that we read. It is guidance from Allah — a source of light, wisdom, comfort and direction for our lives.
Sometimes life becomes busy and our connection with the Qur'an becomes weaker. We may read less, understand less or even go days without opening it. Rajab is a beautiful opportunity to stop, turn back and rebuild that connection before Sha'ban and Ramadan arrive.
There is no special Rajab Qur'an ritual. Instead, use this sacred month as a reminder to return to Allah's Book.
🌙 The Qur'an Is Guidance
Allah describes the Qur'an as guidance for those who believe and seek His direction.
“This is the Book! There is no doubt about it—a guide for those mindful of Allah.”
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:2
The Qur'an teaches us how to worship Allah, how to treat people, how to deal with hardship, how to control our desires and how to live with purpose.
When we reconnect with the Qur'an, we are reconnecting with guidance that can change the way we see our entire life.
💚 Do Not Be Discouraged by How Much You Have Missed
Perhaps you used to read the Qur'an regularly but have fallen away from the habit.
Perhaps you struggle to read Arabic.
Perhaps you read the Qur'an but do not understand its meaning.
Perhaps you have never developed a regular relationship with the Qur'an at all.
Whatever your situation, do not become discouraged.
You do not have to read a lot. You simply have to begin.
One page today can become a habit tomorrow.
📖 Start Small and Be Consistent
One of the easiest mistakes we make is setting a goal that is too large.
We decide that from tomorrow we will read many pages every day. We keep it up for a few days, become tired or busy, and then stop completely.
A better approach is to begin with something manageable.
🌱 Beginner
Read a few verses every day and learn their meaning.
📖 Building
Read one or two pages every day and reflect on what you read.
🌙 Established
Increase your daily reading gradually as your connection grows.
🧠 Read With Understanding
Reading the Arabic Qur'an is an act of worship. At the same time, understanding the message allows the Qur'an to speak directly to our lives.
If you do not understand Arabic, use a reliable translation in a language you understand. Read a small passage and ask yourself:
- What is Allah teaching me?
- What does this passage tell me about Allah?
- Is there something I need to change?
- Is there a command I need to follow?
- Is there a warning I need to take seriously?
- Is there something I should be grateful for?
The purpose is not simply to finish pages. The purpose is to allow the Qur'an to affect the heart.
🌿 Let the Qur'an Enter Your Daily Life
Try connecting your Qur'an reading with something you already do.
🌅 After Fajr: Read a few verses while your mind is fresh.
🕌 After Salah: Read a short passage before returning to your daily activities.
☕ During a quiet moment: Read instead of reaching immediately for your phone.
🌙 Before sleep: Read a small portion and reflect on its meaning.
💎 The Qur'an Brings Light
Allah describes His revelation as a light that guides people from darkness towards what is right.
When we feel confused, the Qur'an can remind us where we are going.
When we feel anxious, its verses can remind us that Allah knows what we are experiencing.
When we become distracted by this world, the Qur'an reminds us of the Hereafter.
When we become proud, it reminds us of our dependence upon Allah.
When we become hopeless, it reminds us of Allah's mercy.
إِنَّ هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنَ يَهْدِي لِلَّتِي هِيَ أَقْوَمُ
“Surely this Qur'an guides to what is most upright.”
Surah Al-Isra 17:9
🕊️ Listen to the Qur'an Too
If you are unable to read for long periods, listening to the Qur'an can help you maintain a connection with Allah's Book.
Listen carefully rather than allowing the recitation to become background noise. Follow along with the translation when possible and reflect on the verses.
A few minutes of attentive listening can be a valuable part of your daily routine.
🌙 Preparing for Ramadan Through the Qur'an
Ramadan is the month in which the Qur'an was revealed. It is therefore wise to strengthen our relationship with the Qur'an before Ramadan begins.
Do not wait for the first night of Ramadan to decide how much Qur'an you will read.
Begin now.
Build the habit now.
Learn how to read with understanding now.
Then, when Ramadan arrives, you will already have a foundation.
📖 Start Before Ramadan
Do not make Ramadan the beginning of your relationship with the Qur'an.
Let Ramadan be the time when that relationship becomes stronger.
Open the Qur'an today.
📋 A Simple Qur'an Challenge
☐ Read Qur'an every day.
☐ Start with a realistic amount.
☐ Read the meaning of what you recite.
☐ Reflect on at least one verse.
☐ Listen attentively to Qur'an when you cannot read.
☐ Write down one lesson that speaks to you.
☐ Share something beneficial from the Qur'an with your family.
☐ Continue the habit through Sha'ban and into Ramadan.
💚 Final Reflection
The Qur'an has been in our homes for years.
Perhaps it is time to allow it to become part of our daily lives again.
You do not need to know everything before you begin.
You do not need to read hundreds of pages.
You simply need to open the Book of Allah and take the first step.
Read.
Listen.
Reflect.
Act upon what you learn.
And keep returning to Allah's Book.
“Indeed, this Qur'an guides to that which is most suitable.”
