🌿 Tawbah — Returning to Allah

🌙 What Is Tawbah?

The word tawbah means to return. In Islam, it means returning to Allah after turning away through sin, neglect or disobedience.

Tawbah is more than simply saying Astaghfirullah. It is a sincere turning of the heart back towards Allah. It involves recognising the wrong, regretting it, seeking Allah's forgiveness and making a genuine effort not to return to the sin.

Allah does not ask us to be perfect. He asks us to turn back to Him.

💚 Never Despair of Allah's Mercy

One of the greatest dangers after committing a sin is believing that we have gone too far to return to Allah.

Shaytan wants a person to think, “I have sinned too much. Allah will never forgive me.” But the Qur'an teaches us something very different: do not despair of Allah's mercy.

A believer may fall. A believer may make mistakes. A believer may struggle with the same weakness more than once. But the believer should never stop turning back to Allah.

🤲 What Is Sincere Tawbah?

Allah says:

Sincere tawbah means that we genuinely want to leave the sin and return to obedience to Allah.

1. Stop the sin

If you are involved in something that Allah has forbidden, make the decision to leave it. Do not deliberately continue the sin while merely asking Allah to forgive you.

2. Feel genuine regret

Regret does not mean destroying yourself with guilt. It means recognising that the sin was wrong and wishing that you had not committed it.

3. Ask Allah for forgiveness

Turn to Allah sincerely. Say Astaghfirullah. Speak to Allah in your own words. Admit your weakness and ask Him to forgive you.

4. Make a sincere intention not to return

At the moment of tawbah, make a genuine commitment to leave the sin. If a person later becomes weak and falls again, that does not mean the earlier tawbah was necessarily insincere. He should repent again and continue striving.

5. Correct the rights of others

If the sin involved another person's rights, tawbah also requires us to deal with that harm appropriately. Where someone has been wronged financially or materially, their rights should be restored. Where seeking forgiveness is appropriate and will not cause greater harm, reconciliation should be pursued.

🌧️ What If I Have Fallen Many Times?

Do not allow repeated mistakes to convince you that you should stop asking Allah for forgiveness.

If you sincerely repent, then continue working on yourself. If you fall again, repent again. Keep fighting the weakness rather than surrendering to it.

The Prophet ﷺ taught us just how precious repentance is. In Sahih Muslim 2747, he described how Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than a person who loses his camel with all his provisions in a barren desert and then unexpectedly finds it again.

🌱 Tawbah Is Also About Changing

True repentance should lead to positive change.

If a person repeatedly falls into the same environment, follows the same habits and keeps the same influences around him, it may become difficult to break the cycle.

After making tawbah, ask yourself:

• What caused me to fall into this sin?
• Which habit needs to change?
• Which people or environments encourage the behaviour?
• What good deed can replace the bad habit?
• How can I strengthen my salah?
• How can I spend more time with the Qur'an?

Tawbah is not simply turning away from something bad. It is also turning towards something better.

🕌 A Simple Daily Tawbah Routine

You do not need a complicated routine. A few sincere minutes every day can help keep the heart connected to Allah.

🤲 A Beautiful Du'a for Forgiveness

The Qur'an teaches us the beautiful supplication of Adam and Hawwa (peace be upon them) after they had wronged themselves:

🌙 Tawbah During Rajab

Rajab gives us a valuable opportunity to pause and look honestly at our lives.

Are there sins we have become comfortable with? Are there prayers we have neglected? Are there relationships that need repairing? Are there habits that are taking us further away from Allah?

Use this sacred month as a reminder to return to Allah. But remember that there is no special Rajab ritual required for tawbah. The virtue lies in sincere repentance itself.

If Rajab becomes the month in which you leave a bad habit, repair a relationship, return to salah or reconnect with the Qur'an, then it can become a turning point in your life.
