Early Life
Bilal (RA) was born in Makkah into slavery, serving Umayyah ibn Khalaf — one of the most fierce opponents of Islam. Despite the harshness of his circumstances, Bilal was known for his strong character, quiet dignity, and an inner strength that no chain could suppress.
Acceptance of Islam and the Test of Faith
When Islam reached Makkah, Bilal (RA) accepted the message of Tawheed immediately and with his whole heart. This enraged his master Umayyah, who subjected him to some of the most brutal torture recorded in early Islamic history. He was dragged into the scorching desert, heavy rocks placed upon his chest, and commanded to renounce his faith.

Under the blazing Makkan sun, with a heavy boulder crushing his chest, Bilal (RA) refused to abandon his faith. His torturers demanded he say the names of their idols — but all he repeated, over and over, was: "Ahad! Ahad!" — One! One! — referring to the oneness of Allah. These two words, spoken under unbearable pain, have echoed through Islamic history as one of the greatest declarations of faith ever uttered.
Freedom Through Abu Bakr (RA)
Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (RA), upon witnessing the torture of Bilal (RA), purchased him from his master and freed him entirely — for the sake of Allah alone. This act was a living demonstration of Islam's message of equality and justice, that no human being owns another, and that faith transcends all social divisions.

His Life with the Prophet ﷺ
Bilal (RA) became one of the closest and most beloved companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ personally appointed him as the first muezzin of Islam — the one whose voice would call the believers to prayer five times every day, uniting the entire community in worship of Allah. His deep, powerful voice rising across Madinah became one of the defining sounds of early Islam.
