Shaʿban
Preparing the Heart for Ramadan
Shaʿban is a month of preparation. As Ramadan draws closer, it is an opportunity for us to prepare not only our homes and schedules, but most importantly, our hearts.
Ramadan is a month of fasting, Qur’an, prayer, charity and remembrance of Allah. But the heart benefits greatly when preparation begins before Ramadan arrives.
Shaʿban gives us an opportunity to look honestly at ourselves and ask: What do I need to change before Ramadan begins?
Perhaps we need to return to Allah after becoming distant. Perhaps we need to leave a bad habit, repair a relationship, increase our Salah, or simply spend more time remembering Allah.
🌿 The Call to Return to Allah
وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
“And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, so that you may be successful.”
Surah An-Nur 24:31
```Preparing the Heart
One of the best ways to prepare for Ramadan is to begin working on the heart now.
We should ask Allah to forgive our sins and make sincere tawbah. We should forgive those who have hurt us, seek forgiveness from those whom we may have wronged, and remove hatred and resentment from our hearts.
A clean heart makes it easier to benefit from the blessings of Ramadan.
🤲 Turn Back to Allah
The Prophet ﷺ taught us that Allah is pleased with the repentance of His servant.
“Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than one of you who finds his lost camel in a desert.”
Sahih Muslim
```🌱 Start Small
We do not have to wait for the first night of Ramadan to change our lives. Small acts started in Shaʿban can help us enter Ramadan with a stronger routine.
🕌 Salah
Guard your five daily prayers and try to improve your concentration in Salah.
📖 Qur’an
Begin reading a little Qur’an every day so that your heart becomes accustomed to it.
🤲 Duʿa
Ask Allah to allow you to reach Ramadan and benefit from its blessings.
❤️ Forgiveness
Let go of grudges and make peace wherever possible.
🌙 A Shaʿban Reflection
Before Ramadan arrives, take a quiet moment and ask yourself:
“What is one thing I can change today that will bring me closer to Allah?”
Choose one thing and begin today. Do not underestimate a small deed done sincerely for Allah.
```🤲 A Duʿa for Shaʿban
اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنَّا عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ
“O Allah, help us to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best manner.”
May Allah prepare our hearts for Ramadan and allow us to reach it in a state that pleases Him. Ameen.
