The Excellent Features of Islam

Chapter 2 of A Guide for the New Muslim: What Makes This Way of Life Special?

“Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope.” (Quran 2:286)

A study-guide summary of a chapter of A Guide for the New Muslim by Jamaal al-Din M. Zarabozo.

1. Pure monotheism

Islam frees people from chasing many masters and many gods. When life has one true object of worship, the soul finds clarity and a settled kind of joy.

2. The religion of Allah

Islam is not a human philosophy. Only God knows how He wishes to be worshipped, so only His guidance can be the final answer to the most important question: what is acceptable to Him?

3. Comprehensiveness

Islam covers this life and the next: body, mind, and spirit; public and private; from prayer to business to family. The author’s advice to a new Muslim is clear: you cannot keep the beliefs and rituals you like and drop the rest.

4. The welfare of this world and the next

Islamic law protects five necessities: religion, life, family ties, the mind, and wealth. These are the things whose loss makes life unbearable, and the rules on worship, marriage, intoxicants, and theft all serve them.

5. Ease

God does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. A traveler may shorten prayers, and becoming Muslim requires no long initiation. The author also warns: this ease is not a license to relax the obligations the law has not eased.

6. A direct relationship with the Creator

There is no priesthood and no go-between. You speak to Allah directly, and He knows what is in your heart. Even ordinary acts such as eating, working, and resting become worship when done with the right intention. Many new Muslims find this a completely new way of looking at the world.

7. Encouraging good and discouraging evil

Islam is not only about purifying yourself. Believers look after one another and gently encourage the good. As a newcomer you will receive plenty of advice from other Muslims, so try to take it in the spirit it is offered, while checking what you are told against the Quran and authentic Sunnah.

8. Honouring human beings

A person’s worth before God depends on their God-consciousness, not race, wealth, gender, or looks. Real dignity comes with real responsibility, as the servant of the Creator.

In short: Islam is a complete, balanced, and merciful way of life with a direct line to Allah. Take all of it, and be easy on yourself.
