Shaʿban—The Month of Preparation
Preparing the heart, strengthening our worship, and getting ready for Ramadan
🌙 Welcome, Shaʿban
Shaʿban is the eighth month of the Islamic calendar and comes immediately before the blessed month of Ramadan. It is a month that can easily pass unnoticed, yet it holds a special place in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Shaʿban is a wonderful opportunity to prepare ourselves spiritually for Ramadan. Rather than waiting until the first day of Ramadan to change our habits, we can use Shaʿban to begin strengthening our prayers, Qur'an recitation, fasting, remembrance of Allah and acts of charity.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself increased his voluntary fasting during Shaʿban. ʿAishah (RA) reported that she did not see him fast in any month more than he fasted in Shaʿban, apart from Ramadan.
Shaʿban is therefore a month of preparation — a bridge between our ordinary routine and the extraordinary worship of Ramadan.
🌿 The Sunnah of Fasting in Shaʿban
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يُفْطِرُ، وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يَصُومُ
“Allah's Messenger ﷺ used to fast until one would say that he would never stop fasting, and he would abandon fasting until one would say that he would never fast.”
ʿAishah (RA) then said that she never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fast more in any month than in Shaʿban.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1969
🌿 Why Is Shaʿban So Important?
Shaʿban sits between Rajab and Ramadan. Because Ramadan receives so much attention and Rajab is one of the sacred months, Shaʿban can sometimes be overlooked.
Yet the Sunnah teaches us that this month deserves our attention.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“That is a month to which people do not pay much attention, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are taken up to the Lord of the worlds, and I like that my deeds be taken up while I am fasting.”
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2357
This reminds us of an important lesson: sometimes the deeds that are performed when others are not paying attention can be especially meaningful.
🌙 Shaʿban Is Our Preparation for Ramadan
Ramadan should not be the month in which we suddenly attempt to change everything about our lives.
Shaʿban gives us the opportunity to begin gradually.
If we want to read more Qur'an during Ramadan, begin increasing our Qur'an reading now.
If we want to pray Tahajjud during Ramadan, begin waking for a little night prayer now.
If we want to give more charity, begin giving regularly now.
If we want to control our tongue, begin guarding our speech now.
Do not wait for Ramadan to make you ready for Ramadan.
Use Shaʿban to prepare yourself.
🌿 Five Ways to Prepare in Shaʿban
1. 🕌 Strengthen Your Salah
Protect the five daily prayers and try to improve their quality. Pray on time, slow down and remember that you are standing before Allah.
2. 📖 Increase Qur'an
Begin building a daily Qur'an habit. Even a few pages every day can make a difference when the habit is maintained consistently.
3. 🤲 Increase Duʿa
Ask Allah to allow you to reach Ramadan, forgive your sins, strengthen your faith and help you make the most of the blessed month.
4. ❤️ Give Charity
Begin giving regularly, even if the amount is small. Charity purifies the heart and reminds us to care for those who are less fortunate.
5. 🌿 Leave Bad Habits
Use Shaʿban to identify habits that you want to leave before Ramadan. Work on them gradually rather than waiting until Ramadan begins.
🌙 Fasting in Shaʿban
Voluntary fasting in Shaʿban is established in the Sunnah. ʿAishah (RA) described Shaʿban as the month in which she saw the Prophet ﷺ fast more than in any other month outside Ramadan.
This makes Shaʿban an excellent time to practise fasting and become accustomed to the physical and spiritual discipline of fasting before Ramadan arrives.
However, Islam teaches balance. A person should not burden himself beyond his ability. The Prophet ﷺ taught that the deeds most beloved to Allah are those that are done consistently, even if they are small.
A simple approach:
- Fast on some days of Shaʿban if you are able.
- Consider the established voluntary fasting days such as Mondays and Thursdays.
- If you have missed obligatory Ramadan fasts, make completing those a priority.
- Do not turn voluntary worship into something that harms your health or prevents you from fulfilling your obligations.
📖 Prepare Your Heart With the Qur'an
Ramadan is the month in which Muslims increase their relationship with the Qur'an. Shaʿban is the perfect time to begin preparing for that relationship.
Allah says:
شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ
“The month of Ramadan is that in which the Qur'an was revealed.”
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185
Instead of waiting for Ramadan to begin reading regularly, establish your routine during Shaʿban.
- Read a few pages after Fajr.
- Read a few pages after ʿIsha.
- Listen to Qur'an while travelling or doing household tasks.
- Read the translation and reflect on the meaning.
- Choose a realistic Ramadan Qur'an goal and begin practising it now.
❤️ Prepare the Heart
Preparing for Ramadan is not only about food, fasting and schedules. The greatest preparation is preparation of the heart.
Shaʿban is a good time to examine ourselves honestly.
- Is there someone I need to forgive?
- Is there someone I have wronged?
- Am I holding onto anger?
- Have I neglected my parents or family?
- Have I become careless with my prayers?
- Do I need to make sincere tawbah to Allah?
A clean heart makes worship sweeter.

✅ Daily Shaʿban Checklist
Try to make these actions part of your daily routine:
- ☐ Pray the five daily prayers on time
- ☐ Read Qur'an
- ☐ Make dhikr
- ☐ Make sincere duʿa
- ☐ Send salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ
- ☐ Give charity or help someone
- ☐ Guard your tongue
- ☐ Avoid unnecessary arguments
- ☐ Ask Allah for forgiveness
- ☐ Do at least one good deed that nobody else needs to know about
🤲 Make Tawbah Before Ramadan
One of the greatest ways to prepare for Ramadan is to return sincerely to Allah.
We all have weaknesses. We all make mistakes. Shaʿban gives us another opportunity to turn back to Allah before the blessed month arrives.
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَتُبْ عَلَيَّ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ
“My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance. Indeed, You are the One who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.”
Turn away from sin, regret what has passed, seek Allah's forgiveness and make a sincere intention not to return to the wrongdoing.
📌 A Note About Special Practices in Shaʿban
Shaʿban is certainly a blessed month for increasing established acts of worship, especially voluntary fasting and other good deeds.
However, Muslims should be careful about attributing particular prayers, rituals or guaranteed rewards to specific nights or dates unless they are supported by authentic evidence.
Our goal should be to follow the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
🌙 Let Shaʿban Change You
Do not allow Shaʿban to pass unnoticed.
Use this month to strengthen your relationship with Allah, increase your Qur'an, improve your salah, practise fasting, give charity, seek forgiveness and prepare your heart for Ramadan.
The goal is not to become perfect overnight. The goal is to begin.
May Allah allow us to reach Ramadan in good health and strong iman, and may He accept our worship from us.
آمِين يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ
