🤲 Dhikr and Du'a

Remembering Allah and Making Sincere Supplication

Use Rajab as an opportunity to remember Allah more often and develop a sincere habit of making du'a.

Dhikr means remembering Allah. It can be done while sitting, walking, working, travelling or resting. Du'a is our opportunity to turn directly to Allah, ask Him for what we need, thank Him and seek His guidance and forgiveness.

🌿 The Heart Needs to Remember Allah

The human heart can easily become distracted by the worries and responsibilities of daily life. We think about our work, our families, our finances, our health and our plans for the future. In the middle of all this, we can sometimes forget the One who gave us everything we have.

Dhikr brings the heart back to Allah.

Allah says:

أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ

“Surely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort.”
— Qur'an 13:28

Dhikr does not mean that our problems disappear immediately. Rather, it reminds us that we are not facing life alone. Allah knows our difficulties, hears our prayers and is always aware of His servants.

🌙 Dhikr in Rajab

Rajab is one of the four sacred months, and it is a valuable opportunity to increase our awareness of Allah and strengthen our worship.

However, there is no authentic special dhikr that must be recited specifically because it is Rajab. We should therefore avoid believing that a particular phrase, number of repetitions or special formula has a special Rajab reward unless there is sound evidence.

Remember Allah abundantly — but do not invent special Rajab rituals.

💚 Simple Words of Dhikr

There are many authentic forms of remembrance that a Muslim can include in daily life. They are simple words, but they carry tremendous meaning.

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ

SubhanAllah — Glory be to Allah.

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ

Alhamdulillah — All praise belongs to Allah.

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Allahu Akbar — Allah is the Greatest.

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ

La ilaha illallah — There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ

Astaghfirullah — I seek forgiveness from Allah.

📖 Dhikr Can Be Simple

You do not need to spend hours sitting in one place before you can remember Allah. Dhikr can become part of your ordinary day.

  • Remember Allah when you wake up.
  • Make dhikr after the obligatory prayers.
  • Remember Allah while walking.
  • Make dhikr while travelling.
  • Say Alhamdulillah when you receive a blessing.
  • Say Astaghfirullah when you recognise a mistake.
  • Say SubhanAllah when you see something beautiful.
  • Send salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ.
  • Remember Allah before going to sleep.

The aim is to make remembrance a natural part of life rather than something we only do at particular times.

🤲 What Is Du'a?

Du'a is supplication. It is when a servant turns to Allah and asks Him for help, guidance, forgiveness, mercy, protection or anything else that is good.

Du'a is an act of worship because it demonstrates our dependence upon Allah. We recognise that He is our Lord and that we are in need of Him.

Allah says:

وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ

“And your Lord has said, ‘Call upon Me; I will respond to you.’”
— Qur'an 40:60

❤️ Speak to Allah With Sincerity

Du'a does not need complicated language. You can ask Allah in your own words for the things you need, while using authentic supplications from the Qur'an and Sunnah whenever you know them.

Tell Allah about your worries. Ask Him for forgiveness. Ask Him to guide your family. Ask Him to strengthen your iman. Ask Him to protect you from sin. Ask Him to help you become a better Muslim.

And remember to ask not only for worldly things, but also for what will benefit you in the Hereafter.

🌿 Begin With Istighfar

One of the most beautiful forms of dhikr is seeking Allah's forgiveness. We all make mistakes. None of us should become so discouraged by our sins that we stop turning back to Allah.

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilayh
“I seek the forgiveness of Allah and repent to Him.”

Seeking forgiveness should not simply be words on the tongue. We should also have sincere regret for our sins and a genuine intention to return to obedience.

🌙 Du'a From the Qur'an

The Qur'an contains beautiful supplications that teach us what to ask Allah. One of the most comprehensive is:

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

“Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
— Qur'an 2:201

This short du'a asks Allah for goodness in both worlds and protection from the Fire. It is a beautiful supplication to learn and make regularly.

🕊️ Du'a for Guidance

We should never underestimate the importance of asking Allah to keep our hearts firm upon Islam.

One of the supplications taught in the Qur'an is:

رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا وَهَبْ لَنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً ۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْوَهَّابُ

“Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from Yourself. Surely You are the Bestower.”
— Qur'an 3:8

This is a powerful reminder that guidance is a gift from Allah. We should never become overconfident about our own faith. We should continually ask Allah to keep us firm.

🕌 Make Du'a After Salah

The five daily prayers give us regular opportunities to remember Allah and turn to Him. After completing the prayer, we can engage in the established adhkar and make sincere supplications to Allah.

Do not rush immediately into the next activity. Give yourself a few moments to remember Allah, seek His forgiveness and make du'a.

The more consistently we turn to Allah, the more natural du'a becomes.

🌙 The Best Times to Make Du'a

Islam teaches us that there are times when making du'a is especially encouraged. Among them are the last part of the night, during sujud and other times established in the Sunnah.

The Prophet ﷺ said that the servant is closest to his Lord while in prostration, and he encouraged us to increase supplication during sujud.

“The servant is closest to his Lord while he is prostrating, so increase supplication.”

— Sahih Muslim 482

💚 Do Not Give Up on Du'a

Sometimes we make du'a and do not see the answer we expected. This can make a person feel discouraged.

But a believer should continue turning to Allah. We do not know what Allah is protecting us from, what He is preparing for us, or what wisdom lies behind the timing of His response.

Keep asking. Keep trusting. Keep turning to Allah.

Never be too discouraged to make du'a.

The door of turning to Allah is always open.

📅 A Simple Daily Dhikr Routine

🌅 Morning: Begin the day by remembering Allah and making du'a for guidance and protection.

🕌 After Salah: Take time for the established post-prayer adhkar instead of immediately rushing away.

☀️ During the Day: Use quiet moments to say SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar and Astaghfirullah.

🤲 During Difficulty: Turn to Allah immediately rather than carrying every worry alone.

🌙 Before Sleep: End your day with remembrance, repentance and sincere du'a.

🌱 Preparing for Ramadan

One of the best ways to prepare for Ramadan is to establish habits before Ramadan arrives. If we wait until the first night of Ramadan before beginning Qur'an, dhikr and du'a, we may find ourselves struggling to develop a routine.

Rajab and Sha'ban can therefore be a time of preparation. Start small. Be consistent. Then increase gradually.

By the time Ramadan arrives, remembering Allah should already feel like part of our daily life.

✨ A Seven-Day Dhikr and Du'a Challenge

Day 1: Make sincere istighfar and ask Allah to forgive you.

Day 2: Spend a few quiet minutes remembering Allah.

Day 3: Learn one du'a from the Qur'an.

Day 4: Make du'a for your parents and family.

Day 5: Make du'a for someone who is struggling.

Day 6: Increase your dhikr throughout the day.

Day 7: Spend time alone with Allah and speak to Him sincerely.

Then continue beyond the seven days. The objective is not a special Rajab ritual. It is to develop a habit that remains with you throughout the year.

❤️ Dhikr Should Change Us

True remembrance of Allah should affect the way we live. If we remember Allah but continue deliberately harming others, lying, backbiting and committing sins without concern, we need to reflect upon the state of our hearts.

Dhikr should make us more humble. It should make us more grateful. It should make us more patient. It should make us quicker to repent. It should make us kinder to other people.

The purpose is not simply to move the tongue, but to awaken the heart.

🌟 A Final Reminder

Rajab does not require a special dhikr programme or a special du'a formula. The Sunnah has already given us a beautiful path of remembrance.

Remember Allah throughout your day. Ask Him for what you need. Thank Him for what you have. Seek His forgiveness for your mistakes. Ask Him to guide your heart. Pray for your family and for the Ummah.

And when you feel weak, return to Allah again. When you feel lost, ask Allah for guidance. When you feel grateful, praise Allah. When you are afraid, seek His protection. When you have sinned, repent.

Keep turning to Allah.

رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي

“My Lord, expand for me my chest.”
— Qur'an 20:25

May Allah fill our hearts with His remembrance, forgive our sins, accept our du'as, strengthen our iman, guide our families, and prepare us for Ramadan with hearts that are sincere and alive.

Āmīn.
