Forgiveness and Tawbah
Return to Allah with a Sincere Heart
```❤️ Allah's Door of Mercy Is Always Open
Ramadan is a month of mercy, forgiveness and returning to Allah. It is an opportunity to look honestly at our lives, recognise our mistakes and turn back to our Creator.
None of us is perfect. We all make mistakes and fall short. What matters is that we do not allow our mistakes to keep us away from Allah. Instead, we should turn to Him with sincerity and ask Him for forgiveness.
🌿 Never Give Up Hope
Allah's mercy is greater than our mistakes. A sincere return to Allah is always worth making.
```📖 Allah Calls Us Back to Him
قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ
“Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah.’”
Qur’an 39:53
```This verse gives us hope. When we have sinned, the answer is not to turn away from Allah. The answer is to turn towards Him.
🌿 What Is Tawbah?
Tawbah means turning back to Allah. It is a sincere return from sin and disobedience towards obedience and righteousness.
Tawbah is more than simply saying “Astaghfirullah.” It involves the heart, the tongue and our actions.
1️⃣ Leave the Sin
If the sin is continuing, make a sincere effort to stop it.
2️⃣ Feel Regret
Recognise the wrong and sincerely regret having committed it.
3️⃣ Seek Forgiveness
Ask Allah sincerely to forgive you.
4️⃣ Resolve to Improve
Make a sincere intention not to deliberately return to the sin.
🤝 When Another Person Has Been Harmed
If the wrongdoing involved another person's rights, sincere repentance also requires addressing that person's right where appropriate.
This may involve returning something that was taken, correcting a wrong, repaying a debt or making amends where appropriate.
```📿 Make Istighfar
One of the simplest ways to return to Allah is through Istighfar — asking Allah for forgiveness.
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ
Astaghfirullah
“I seek forgiveness from Allah.”
```Say it sincerely and think about what you are asking Allah for. Istighfar should not merely be words on the tongue; let it encourage the heart to change.
🤲 A Beautiful Duʿa for Forgiveness
The Prophet ﷺ taught a comprehensive supplication known as Sayyid al-Istighfar, the chief supplication for seeking forgiveness.
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَىٰ عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَأَبُوءُ لَكَ بِذَنْبِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ
Meaning:
“O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god worthy of worship except You. You created me and I am Your servant. I keep my covenant and promise to You as much as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari
```❤️ Make Your Tawbah Personal
Take some quiet time during Ramadan to think about the areas of your life that need improvement.
Ask Yourself:
- Am I protecting my five daily prayers?
- Is there a sin I need to leave?
- Do I need to ask someone for forgiveness?
- Do I need to return something that belongs to someone else?
- Have I neglected my relationship with the Qur’an?
- Are there people I need to treat with greater kindness?
- What changes do I want to make after Ramadan?
🌙 A Simple Ramadan Tawbah Plan
- Choose a quiet moment.
Sit somewhere peaceful and turn your attention towards Allah. - Recognise your mistakes.
Be honest with yourself about what needs to change. - Ask Allah for forgiveness.
Make sincere Istighfar and personal duʿa. - Leave what is wrong.
Take practical steps to move away from the sin. - Make a plan to improve.
Replace harmful habits with beneficial ones. - Keep returning to Allah.
If you make another mistake, do not give up. Return to Allah again.
Tawbah is not about becoming perfect overnight. It is about sincerely returning to Allah.
```🤍 Learn to Forgive Others
Ramadan is also a time to examine how we treat other people. Just as we ask Allah to forgive us, we should try to forgive others and let go of anger and resentment where we can.
Forgiving someone does not mean that wrongdoing was acceptable. It means choosing a path of mercy and leaving the matter with Allah where appropriate.
Before Ramadan ends, ask yourself:
Is there someone I need to forgive? Is there someone I need to apologise to? Is there a relationship I can repair?
```🌿 Do Not Despair
Shaytan may try to make a person believe that their sins are too great, that they have failed too many times or that they are not worthy of returning to Allah.
Do not let despair keep you away from Allah.
