Shaʿban
Preparing for Taraweeh
Ramadan nights are precious. As the blessed month approaches, Shaʿban gives us an opportunity to prepare ourselves for the beautiful night prayers of Ramadan.
```Taraweeh is one of the special acts of worship associated with the nights of Ramadan. Muslims around the world stand in prayer, listening to the Qur’an and seeking closeness to Allah.
For some people, standing for a longer period at night can feel difficult at first. Shaʿban is a good time to gradually prepare our bodies, our schedules and, most importantly, our hearts.
The aim is not simply to be able to stand for a long time. The aim is to stand before Allah with sincerity, humility and hope.
🌙 The Virtue of Ramadan Night Prayer
“Whoever establishes prayer during the nights of Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.”
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
```🕌 What Is Taraweeh?
Taraweeh refers to the voluntary night prayer offered during Ramadan. It is part of the wider practice of Qiyam al-Layl, standing in prayer during the night.
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged the believers to stand in prayer during Ramadan. He also prayed at night with his Companions, while taking care not to make the prayer obligatory upon them.
Taraweeh may be prayed in congregation at the masjid or individually at home. What matters is sincere worship and seeking the reward of Allah.
🌿 Prepare Your Body
Ramadan changes our normal routine. We eat earlier, wake during the night and may spend more time standing in prayer.
Use Shaʿban to establish healthier sleeping and waking habits. If possible, gradually become accustomed to staying awake a little later and waking for voluntary night prayer.
😴 Improve Sleep
Work towards a routine that allows you to rest properly while making time for night worship.
🧍 Build Stamina
Regular Salah and voluntary prayer can help you become comfortable with standing for longer periods.
⏰ Plan Your Evening
Think ahead about meals, family responsibilities and your time at the masjid.
❤️ Protect Your Energy
Ramadan is a month of worship. Avoid wasting your best energy on unnecessary activities.
❤️ Prepare Your Heart
Physical preparation is useful, but spiritual preparation is even more important.
When you stand for Taraweeh, remember that you are standing before Allah. The Qur’an being recited is not simply something to listen to — it is guidance from your Creator.
Try to enter Ramadan with a sincere intention: “I want to worship Allah and seek His forgiveness and reward.”
📖 Standing Before Allah
وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِ نَافِلَةً لَّكَ
“And during the night, rise with it as additional worship for you.”
Surah Al-Isra 17:79
```🌱 Your Shaʿban Preparation Plan
1. Start with night prayer.
If you do not regularly pray at night, begin with a small amount that you can maintain.
2. Read Qur’an in your Salah.
Use Shaʿban to become more comfortable reciting the Qur’an during prayer.
3. Learn the meanings.
Understanding what you hear during Taraweeh can make the prayer more meaningful.
4. Prepare your schedule.
Make room in your evenings for Salah, Qur’an, duʿa and family.
5. Keep your intention sincere.
Your goal is to seek the pleasure and forgiveness of Allah, not simply to complete a number of prayers.
🌿 Remember: Worship Should Be Sustainable
Do not feel discouraged if you cannot stand for the entire Taraweeh prayer at the masjid. Every person has different circumstances and abilities.
What matters is sincerity and making the effort to worship Allah. A person should worship according to their ability and avoid harming themselves.
```💭 Shaʿban Reflection
Before Ramadan arrives, ask yourself:
“Am I preparing not only to fast during the day, but also to worship Allah during the night?”
Let Shaʿban be the month in which you begin preparing your nights for Ramadan.
```🤲 A Duʿa for Night Worship
اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ
“O Allah, help me to remember You, thank You and worship You in the best manner.”
Ameen.
