Ibrahim (RA)—The Son of the Prophet ﷺ and Mariyah
The child of Madinah, and the tears of the Messenger ﷺ

Introduction
Ibrahim was the youngest son of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the only one born in Madinah. His mother was Mariyah al-Qibtiyyah (RA), and his birth brought great joy to the Prophet ﷺ, who was by then in his sixties.
Ibrahim lived for only about a year and a half, but the moments around his birth and death are among the most tender scenes in the life of the Prophet ﷺ. They show us the heart of the Messenger ﷺ as a father.

Mariyah al-Qibtiyyah (RA)
Mariyah (RA) was a Coptic woman from Egypt who was sent to the Prophet ﷺ as a gift by al-Muqawqis, the ruler of Egypt. She embraced Islam and settled in Madinah. Apart from Khadijah (RA), Mariyah was the only woman who bore the Prophet ﷺ a child.
A Joyful Birth
When Ibrahim was born, the Prophet ﷺ was filled with happiness. Anas ibn Malik (RA) reported that he said a son had been born to him that night and that he named him after his forefather, Ibrahim (AS). The Prophet ﷺ had lost his other sons long before, and this birth was a gift late in life.
Ibrahim was given to a wet nurse, Umm Sayf (RA), whose husband was a blacksmith living on the outskirts of Madinah. The Prophet ﷺ would visit them often, and Anas (RA) recalled how he would take the baby into his arms, kiss him, and hold him close, even in a house filled with the smoke of the forge.
The Passing of Ibrahim
Ibrahim fell ill and died at around a year and a half old. The Prophet ﷺ was with him as he passed, and his eyes began to shed tears. Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf (RA) said, "Even you, O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet ﷺ replied that this was mercy, and then he wept again.
💧 What the Prophet ﷺ Said
"The eye sheds tears and the heart grieves, and we say only what pleases our Lord. Indeed, O Ibrahim, we are grieved by your departure." — Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
In these words, the Prophet ﷺ taught the ummah how to grieve. Crying is not forbidden and does not contradict faith, but complaining against the decree of Allah is. He also gave comfort that Ibrahim would have a wet nurse in Paradise to complete his nursing.
The Solar Eclipse
On the day Ibrahim died, the sun was eclipsed. Some people said that it had darkened because of the death of the Prophet's ﷺ son. Even in his deepest grief, the Prophet ﷺ did not allow this belief to spread.
He told the people that the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah, that they are not eclipsed for the death or the birth of anyone, and that when they see them, they should call upon Allah, pray, and give charity. He then led the people in the eclipse prayer.
Had the Prophet ﷺ wanted to strengthen belief in himself, this was an easy opportunity. Instead, he chose the truth and directed the hearts of the people towards Allah alone.
Lessons From the Life of Ibrahim
- Mercy is part of the Sunnah. Kissing, holding, and showing love to children is what the Prophet ﷺ did.
- Tears are allowed. Grief is a natural expression of love, as long as we do not object to Allah's decree.
- Say what pleases Allah. Even in loss, the Prophet ﷺ chose words of patience and acceptance.
- Truth above self-interest. He refused to allow a natural event to be linked to his son's death.
- Comfort for parents. The Prophet ﷺ himself buried a young child, so every grieving parent has an example to turn to.
May Allah be pleased with Ibrahim and his mother, Mariyah, fill our hearts with mercy as the Prophet ﷺ had, and reunite every parent with their children in Paradise. Ameen.
