Shaʿban
Increase Your Fasting
Shaʿban is a beautiful opportunity to prepare for Ramadan. One way we can prepare ourselves is by increasing voluntary fasting, according to our ability.
Ramadan requires us to fast from dawn until sunset for an entire month. For some people, suddenly changing their eating and sleeping routine can be difficult.
Shaʿban gives us an opportunity to begin preparing gradually. Voluntary fasting can help us become accustomed to leaving food and drink for the sake of Allah while also teaching our hearts patience, discipline and gratitude.
🌿 The Prophet ﷺ Fasted in Shaʿban
ʿAishah (RA) described the fasting of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said:
“I did not see the Prophet ﷺ complete a month of fasting except Ramadan, and I did not see him fast more in any month than Shaʿban.”
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
```🌙 Why Fast in Shaʿban?
Voluntary fasting is not simply about staying away from food and drink. It is an act of worship that reminds us that we are servants of Allah.
When we fast, we learn to control our desires, guard our speech, avoid sinful behaviour and become more conscious of Allah.
These qualities are exactly what we need as we enter Ramadan.
🤲 Strengthens Taqwa
Fasting reminds us that Allah sees us even when nobody else does.
❤️ Trains Patience
We learn to control our desires and remain patient for the sake of Allah.
📖 Prepares for Ramadan
Beginning gradually can help us enter Ramadan with a familiar fasting routine.
🌿 Builds Gratitude
Hunger reminds us to appreciate the blessings that Allah gives us every day.
⚠️ A Gentle Reminder
Voluntary fasting should be approached according to a person's circumstances and ability. Islam does not require us to harm ourselves. Those who are ill, elderly, or have medical conditions should seek appropriate guidance before fasting.
```🌱 A Simple Shaʿban Plan
If you are able to fast voluntarily, you can use Shaʿban to build your Ramadan routine gradually.
1. Choose manageable days.
Start with a small number of voluntary fasts rather than overwhelming yourself.
2. Make your intention sincerely for Allah.
Remember that the purpose is worship, not simply preparing physically for Ramadan.
3. Use the fasting day wisely.
Increase your Qur’an, dhikr, duʿa and good deeds while fasting.
4. Learn from your experience.
Notice what makes fasting easier and use what you learn when Ramadan arrives.
📖 The Purpose of Fasting
لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ
“So that you may attain taqwa.”
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183
```🌙 Shaʿban Reflection
Fasting is not only about feeling hunger.
It is about teaching the heart to choose Allah over its desires.
As Ramadan approaches, let Shaʿban be the month in which you begin training your heart, your tongue and your actions.
```🤲 Make This Duʿa
اللَّهُمَّ بَلِّغْنَا رَمَضَانَ وَأَعِنَّا عَلَى صِيَامِهِ وَقِيَامِهِ
“O Allah, allow us to reach Ramadan and help us to fast it and stand in prayer during it.”
Ameen.
