Taraweeh and Qiyam
Making the nights of Ramadan a time of prayer and remembrance
The nights of Ramadan are a precious opportunity for additional worship. Taraweeh and other voluntary night prayers allow us to stand before Allah, listen to His words and spend part of the night in remembrance and supplication.
🌙 The Virtue of Night Prayer in Ramadan
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged believers to stand in prayer during Ramadan with sincere faith and hope for Allah's reward.
“Whoever establishes prayer during the nights of Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.”
```Sahih al-Bukhari 37
```This gives us a beautiful goal for Ramadan nights: not simply completing a certain number of rakʿahs, but standing before Allah with faith, sincerity and hope for His reward.
🕌 What Is Taraweeh?
Taraweeh refers to the voluntary night prayer commonly performed during Ramadan after the obligatory ʿIsha prayer. It is part of the additional night worship of Ramadan.
The Prophet ﷺ prayed night prayer during Ramadan, and his companions continued this worship. The prayer may be performed in congregation or individually.
Remember the purpose
Taraweeh is an opportunity to worship Allah, listen to the Qur'an, remember Him and seek His forgiveness. It should not become simply a race to finish the prayer.
🌌 What Is Qiyam?
Qiyam al-Layl means standing in prayer during the night. It is a voluntary act of worship that can be performed throughout the year, with special significance during Ramadan.
Qiyam does not have to mean spending the entire night praying. Even a short amount of sincere night prayer can become a valuable part of your Ramadan routine.
💚 Prepare Your Heart for Taraweeh
The best preparation for Taraweeh begins before you enter the masjid or begin praying at home.
🤲 Renew Your Intention
Remind yourself that you are praying for Allah.
📖 Connect With the Qur'an
Read some Qur'an and its meaning before the night prayer.
🧘 Be Patient
Prepare yourself for a longer period of standing and listening.
❤️ Leave Distractions
Put away unnecessary distractions and focus your heart on worship.
🕌 Taraweeh at the Masjid
Praying Taraweeh in congregation can create a special Ramadan atmosphere. The masjid brings together Muslims of different ages and backgrounds to stand together in worship.
When attending the masjid
- Arrive with a sincere intention.
- Perform ʿIsha before Taraweeh.
- Listen attentively to the recitation.
- Avoid unnecessary conversation.
- Be considerate of other worshippers.
- Pray according to your ability.
- Leave peacefully and continue remembering Allah.
🏠 Praying at Home
If you cannot attend the masjid, you can still make your Ramadan nights special through prayer, Qur'an, duʿa and dhikr at home.
You can pray a manageable amount and increase your worship when you are able. Ramadan worship should encourage us to draw closer to Allah rather than overwhelm us.
Consistency matters. A person who establishes a realistic night-prayer routine may find it easier to maintain that worship throughout Ramadan.
🌌 Make the Last Part of the Night Special
The later part of the night is a precious time for worship. If you are able to wake before Fajr, use some of that quiet time for salah, Qur'an, dhikr and duʿa.
Even if you cannot spend a long time awake, a few sincere moments before Fajr can become meaningful.
A Quiet Time With Allah
Wake up, pray what you are able to pray, make istighfar and ask Allah sincerely for His mercy, forgiveness and guidance.
📖 Listen to the Qur'an
One of the beautiful aspects of Taraweeh is listening to the Qur'an being recited. Try to listen attentively and reflect on the meanings whenever possible.
If you understand the language of the Qur'an, think about the message of the verses. If you do not understand Arabic, learning the meanings of the passages being recited can help you connect with them.
⚖️ Worship According to Your Ability
Ramadan is a month of increased worship, but every person has different circumstances, responsibilities and abilities.
Do not become discouraged because someone else is praying longer than you. Focus on sincerity and do what you can consistently.
A balanced approach
- Protect the obligatory prayers first.
- Add voluntary prayer according to your ability.
- Make time for Qur'an and duʿa.
- Get enough rest to fulfil your responsibilities.
- Keep your worship sincere and manageable.
👨👩👧 Include Your Family
Families can make Ramadan nights meaningful together. Parents can encourage children to participate in prayer according to their age and ability, while creating a peaceful atmosphere around worship.
The aim is to help the family develop love for prayer and the Qur'an, rather than making worship feel like a burden.
📅 A Simple Ramadan Night Plan
🌇 Maghrib: Break the fast, pray Maghrib and spend time with family.
🍽️ After Iftar: Avoid eating so heavily that you become uncomfortable during prayer.
🕌 ʿIsha: Prepare yourself for night worship.
🌙 Taraweeh: Pray with sincerity and listen attentively to the Qur'an.
📖 After Taraweeh: Read Qur'an, make dhikr or spend quiet time with family.
🌌 Before Fajr: If possible, wake for additional prayer, duʿa and istighfar.
