Al-Qasim (RA)—The Firstborn Son of the Prophet ﷺ
The child behind the name Abu al-Qasim

Introduction
Al-Qasim was the first child of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his beloved wife Khadijah (RA). He was born in Makkah, and his birth made the Prophet ﷺ a father for the first time.
Very little detail has been reported about Al-Qasim's short life, and the scholars of sirah differ on some of it. Even so, what we do know carries a lasting legacy, because the Prophet ﷺ became known by a name that came from his firstborn son.

Abu al-Qasim—A Name That Lives On
The Prophet ﷺ was known by the title Abu al-Qasim, meaning "the father of al-Qasim." In Arab culture, a person's kunya was often taken from the name of their eldest son, and this became one of the most familiar names by which the Prophet ﷺ was addressed.
The Prophet ﷺ later told his companions that they could name their children after him but should not adopt his kunya for themselves. The name Abu al-Qasim stayed associated with him alone, and every time it is used, it recalls the little boy born in Makkah.
The First Loss
Al-Qasim passed away while still very young. The reports differ on his exact age, with most saying he was around two years old, and on whether he died shortly before or after the revelation began. What is clear is that he was the first of the Prophet's ﷺ children to return to Allah, and that the Prophet ﷺ and Khadijah (RA) faced the loss with patience.
Khadijah (RA) would go on to be the mother of the Prophet's ﷺ other children and the steady support of the Prophet ﷺ through years of hardship. Her home in those years was one that knew both great love and great sorrow.
Lessons From the Life of Al-Qasim
- A short life can leave a lasting mark. Al-Qasim lived only a couple of years, yet his name is remembered every time the Prophet ﷺ is called Abu al-Qasim.
- Prophets are tested too. Even the best of creation lost a child. Loss does not mean that Allah is displeased.
- Patience begins with the first blow. The reward of patience is for the one who is patient at the very beginning of a calamity.
- Grieving parents are not alone. The Prophet ﷺ and Khadijah (RA) knew the pain of burying a child, and their example brings comfort to every parent who has been through the same.
May Allah be pleased with Al-Qasim, grant patience to every grieving parent, and gather us with the family of the Prophet ﷺ in Paradise. Ameen.
