Uthman ibn Affan (RA) was one of the earliest converts to Islam and the third Caliph of the Muslim Ummah. He is famously known as Dhun-Nurayn — The Possessor of Two Lights — because he married two daughters of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ at different times. He is remembered for his extraordinary modesty, boundless generosity, and his historic role in preserving the Qur'an in a single unified written form for all generations to come.

Early Life
Uthman (RA) was born into a wealthy and respected family of the Quraysh tribe. Even before Islam, he was known for his honesty, gentle nature, and strong moral character. He was a successful merchant and widely respected in Makkah for his integrity and refined conduct.
Acceptance of Islam
Uthman (RA) accepted Islam through the call of Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (RA). His acceptance was immediate and sincere, making him one of the earliest supporters of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He went on to become among the most beloved companions for his gentle character and unwavering generosity.

Uthman (RA) is the only person in history to have married two daughters of a prophet. He first married Ruqayyah (RA), and after her passing, he married Umm Kulthum (RA) — both daughters of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This is why he earned the title Dhun-Nurayn — The Possessor of Two Lights.
His Life with the Prophet ﷺ
Uthman (RA) was deeply loved by the Prophet ﷺ for his modesty and generosity. He participated in many key events of early Islam. Though he was unable to attend the Battle of Badr — he remained behind to care for his ill wife Ruqayyah (RA) — the Prophet ﷺ still considered him among the participants and gave him a share of the reward. Such was the esteem in which he was held.

- Financing the entire army during the Expedition of Tabuk
- Purchasing the Well of Rumah and donating it for public use
- Expanding Masjid al-Nabawi and Masjid al-Haram
- Unifying the Qur'an into one standard manuscript for all Muslims
The Preservation of the Qur'an
One of the greatest gifts Uthman (RA) gave to the entire Muslim Ummah — across all generations — was the standardisation of the Qur'an. As Islam spread rapidly into new regions, differences in recitation began to appear among new Muslim communities. Recognising the danger this posed to the unity of the Ummah, Uthman (RA) ordered the compilation of a single standardised copy of the Qur'an based on the original manuscript compiled during the time of Abu Bakr (RA).
This Mushaf was carefully prepared and distributed to the major Islamic cities. The Qur'an we read today traces directly back to this monumental effort.

His contributions continue to benefit the entire Muslim Ummah until the Day of Judgement.
