Khadijah bint Khuwaylid رضي الله عنها
First Wife of the Prophet ﷺ — The First Muslim — Mother of the Believers
"She believed in me when no one else did; she accepted Islam when people rejected me; and she helped and comforted me when there was no one else to lend me a helping hand."
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ speaking of Khadijah (RA)
🌿 A Noble and Remarkable Woman
Khadijah (RA) came from a noble family — her father Khuwaylid had been one of the most honoured leaders of the Quraysh. After the death of her first husband, she became a successful and respected businesswoman. When the young Muhammad ﷺ — already known throughout Makkah as Al-Ameen, the Trustworthy — returned from Syria having made exceptional profits on her behalf, she was so moved by his character that she proposed marriage to him. He was twenty-five years old. She was forty.
Their marriage was one of profound love, respect and devotion. She bore him children — three sons who died in infancy and four daughters who survived: Zaynab, Ruqayya, Umm Kulthum, and Fatima. For twenty-five years they shared a life of remarkable closeness.
✨ The First to Believe
When the Prophet ﷺ returned from the Cave of Hira trembling after the first revelation, it was Khadijah (RA) who wrapped him in a blanket and calmed him. When he described what had happened, she did not hesitate for a single moment. She was certain — knowing him as she did — that he was neither mad nor deceived. She comforted him with words that became famous: "Do not worry — for by Him Who has dominion over my soul, I hope that you are the Prophet of this nation. You are good to your relatives, you speak the truth, you help those in need, you support the weak, and you answer the call of those in distress."
She was the first person — man or woman — to accept Islam. She bore witness: "I testify that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." All her wealth was spent in the way of Allah — freeing enslaved Muslims, feeding the community, and supporting her husband in every trial he faced.
Greetings from Allah: The Angel Jibreel (AS) once came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Khadijah is just coming with food for you. When she comes, give her greetings of peace from her Lord and from me, and give her the good news of a palace of jewels in the Garden where there will be neither any noise nor any tiredness." — Sahih Al-Bukhari. Allah Himself sent His Salam upon her.
🕊️ Her Passing and the Year of Sorrow
After three years of brutal boycott in the mountains outside Makkah — years of hunger, cold and hardship — the toll on Khadijah (RA) proved too great. She passed away at the age of sixty-five, in the month of Ramadan, after twenty-five years of marriage. The Prophet ﷺ mourned her deeply. He named the year of her passing 'the Year of Sorrow'.
Even years later, his love for her never faded. He would send food to her old friends and remember her constantly. When Aisha (RA) once asked him if Khadijah had been the only woman worthy of his love, he replied: "She believed in me when no one else did." She was his first love, his greatest supporter, and the first believer in Islam.
May Allah be pleased with Khadijah bint Khuwaylid — the first Muslim, the first supporter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and a woman whose love and faith changed the world.
