Hasan ibn Ali (RA)

The elder grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, whose peacemaking united a divided Ummah

"This son of mine is a Sayyid (chief), and I hope Allah will reconcile through him two great parties of Muslims." — Prophet Muhammad ﷺ [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

A Beloved Grandson

Hasan ibn Ali (RA) was born in Madinah in the third year after Hijrah, the eldest son of Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) and Fatimah (RA), the Prophet's ﷺ beloved daughter. The Prophet ﷺ himself chose his name, and he was raised in extremely close proximity to his grandfather, who openly and repeatedly expressed his deep love for him.

The Prophet ﷺ would carry Hasan on his shoulders, and companions often saw him kissing his grandson. He declared: "O Allah, I love him, so love him, and love whoever loves him." [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim] On another occasion, while the Prophet ﷺ was prostrating in prayer, Hasan (and his brother Husain) climbed onto his back — the Prophet ﷺ prolonged his sujood so as not to disturb the child, only rising once he had climbed off.

🌿 Sayyid of the Youth of Paradise

Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3768 — Narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA): The Prophet ﷺ said: "Hasan and Husain are the chiefs (Sayyids) of the youth of Paradise."

This hadith places Hasan and his brother Husain among the very few individuals given such an honoured description by the Prophet ﷺ himself — a title reflecting both their lineage and their character.

A Striking Resemblance

Companions frequently remarked on how closely Hasan (RA) resembled the Prophet ﷺ, particularly in the upper half of his body and his facial features. Anas ibn Malik (RA) said: "No one resembled the Messenger of Allah ﷺ more than Hasan ibn Ali." [Sahih Al-Bukhari]. This physical resemblance was often remarked upon as a visible reminder of his close bond to his grandfather.

🕊️ The Year of Unity (Aam al-Jama'ah)

Following the martyrdom of his father, Ali (RA), in the year 40 AH, Hasan (RA) was recognised as Caliph by the people of Kufa and much of the wider Muslim community. However, a rival claim from Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan (RA) in Syria threatened to split the Ummah into prolonged civil conflict — the very division the Prophet ﷺ had foreseen decades earlier in the hadith quoted above.

To prevent further bloodshed among Muslims, Hasan (RA) made the remarkable decision to abdicate the Caliphate in favour of Mu'awiyah (RA), on the condition that the Ummah be reunited under a single leadership. This event became known as Aam al-Jama'ah — the Year of Unity (41 AH) — precisely fulfilling the Prophet's ﷺ prophecy that Allah would reconcile two great parties of Muslims through him.

🌿 A Rare Kind of Leadership

Hasan (RA) had every claim to the Caliphate by lineage and by the allegiance already given to him, yet he set it aside for the sake of preserving the unity of the Ummah — choosing peace and the wellbeing of the wider community over his own position of authority. This remains one of the most significant acts of selflessness in early Islamic history.

Character and Generosity

Hasan (RA) was known throughout his life for his exceptional generosity, often giving away his wealth freely to those in need, and for his gentle, dignified manner. He performed Hajj on foot on multiple occasions out of humility, despite having the means to travel otherwise. His life after relinquishing the Caliphate was spent largely in Madinah, away from political conflict, in worship and in caring for his family.

His Passing

Hasan (RA) passed away in Madinah in 49 AH (or 50 AH, according to some narrations), at around 45 years of age. He was buried in Jannat al-Baqi, the cemetery in Madinah where many of the Prophet's ﷺ family and companions are laid to rest.
