A Beloved Grandson
Husain ibn Ali (RA) was born in Madinah in the fourth year after Hijrah, the younger son of Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) and Fatimah (RA). Like his elder brother Hasan, his name was chosen by the Prophet ﷺ himself, and he too was raised in close physical and emotional closeness to his grandfather.
The Prophet ﷺ was seen carrying Husain on his shoulders in public, and openly declared his love for both grandsons: "Whoever loves them has loved me, and whoever hates them has hated me." [Sahih Al-Bukhari]. Together with his brother Hasan, Husain (RA) is named among the Sayyids of the youth of Paradise, a title given directly by the Prophet ﷺ.
🌿 A Tender Scene
Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3775 — Narrated by Ya'la ibn Murrah (RA): The Prophet ﷺ said: "Husain is from me, and I am from Husain." He then added: "O Allah, love whoever loves Husain," and mentioned that Husain was a grandson among grandsons.
Companions also narrated that Husain (RA), while still a small child, once climbed onto the Prophet's ﷺ back while he was prostrating in prayer — the Prophet ﷺ extended his sujood far longer than usual so as not to disturb him, only rising once the child had climbed down on his own.
Early Life
Husain (RA) was only around six years old when the Prophet ﷺ passed away, and he grew up under the guidance of his father Ali (RA), witnessing firsthand the turbulent early decades of the Muslim community — the Caliphates of Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman (RA), his father's own Caliphate, and finally his brother Hasan's abdication in the interest of Muslim unity in 41 AH.
⚔️ The Journey to Karbala
After the death of Mu'awiyah (RA) in 60 AH, his son Yazid assumed leadership, and the people of Kufa wrote to Husain (RA), urging him to come and lead them, pledging their support. Husain (RA) set out from Makkah toward Kufa with his family and a small group of companions — reports vary, but traditionally numbering around 72 men, along with women and children.
The promised support from Kufa did not materialise as pledged, and Husain's (RA) small caravan was intercepted by a much larger force at Karbala, in present-day Iraq, on the plains near the Euphrates River. Surrounded and denied access to water for days, Husain (RA) and his companions were given an ultimatum to pledge allegiance to Yazid or face battle. Husain (RA) refused to give allegiance to a rule he considered contrary to the principles of Islamic leadership and justice.
🌿 The 10th of Muharram (Ashura), 61 AH
On the Day of Ashura, Husain (RA), his family members, and his companions were martyred at Karbala, vastly outnumbered by the opposing forces. This tragedy is remembered throughout the Muslim world every year on the 10th of Muharram, as a profound reminder of the cost of standing firm for truth and justice, even when the outcome appears certain defeat by worldly standards.
His Lasting Legacy
Husain's (RA) stand at Karbala is remembered across the Muslim world — among Sunni and Shia Muslims alike — as an act of extraordinary courage and principle: refusing to legitimise a rule that betrayed the values of justice taught by his grandfather ﷺ, even at the cost of his own life and the lives of his family. His grave in Karbala remains a site of visitation and reflection for millions of Muslims to this day.
The month of Muharram, and particularly the Day of Ashura, is observed throughout the Ummah as a time of reflection on sacrifice, patience, and standing for what is right — themes deeply connected to the memory of Husain ibn Ali (RA) and the events of Karbala.
