A Guide for the New Muslim

Welcome, and congratulations. This is your starting point for the first steps, the first questions, and the first hard days of life as a Muslim.

“O believers! Enter completely into Islam.”

Surah al-Baqarah 2:208

Who this guide is for

If you have recently said the shahadah, or you are a reverting brother or sister who still has questions about the basics, this guide was written with you in mind. It does not try to convince you of anything. It takes for granted that you have already found the truth and asks the next question: what now?

The book behind this page is A Guide for the New Muslim by Jamaal al-Din M. Zarabozo, who accepted Islam himself. He wrote it as the book he wished he had been handed when he first became Muslim, and it grew out of years of helping other new Muslims through the same confusion. It is a long book (about 250 pages), so we have laid it out chapter by chapter. Read them in order, or jump to whatever you need today.

Short on time? Start with Becoming a Muslim and then the Wudu and Salah guide. Everything else can wait until you are settled. Nobody learns the whole religion in a week, and you are not expected to.

A few honest words

Many reverts say the hardest part is not the new rules. It is the people. Some relatives may be upset or distant. Some Muslims may not greet you warmly, simply because they are not used to it. That is rarely ill will, and it says nothing about the truth of what you have chosen. Hold on to your prayers, keep reading, and try to find one or two good Muslim friends who can walk with you.
