A Special Child, A Special Trust

A reflection for parents and caregivers of children with special needs

Dedicated to the parents and caregivers of children with special needs.

Allah does not place on any soul a burden greater than it can bear.

— Meaning of Quran 2:286

Every Child Is a Trust

Every child is a trust (amanah) from Allah, created with wisdom. A child who learns slowly, who speaks differently, or who needs extra care is not a mistake and is never a punishment. In the sight of Allah, worth is not measured by ability, appearance, or achievement. The Prophet ﷺ taught that Allah looks at our hearts and our deeds (Sahih Muslim).

Mercy Is the Way of the Prophet ﷺ.

Once the Prophet ﷺ kissed his grandson Hasan while a man named Al-Aqra’ ibn Habis was sitting with him. Al-Aqra’ remarked that he had ten children and had never kissed any of them. The Prophet ﷺ looked at him and said that whoever shows no mercy will be shown no mercy (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

Every hug, every patient repetition, and every sleepless night spent caring for your child is part of that mercy.

The Reward of Patience

Allah promises that those who are patient will be given their reward without measure (Quran 39:10). The Prophet ﷺ also taught that no hardship, worry, or sorrow reaches a believer, even the prick of a thorn, except that Allah uses it to wipe away sins (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

Patience does not mean staying silent or pretending to be fine. It means turning to Allah, with tears and du’a, when things are hard.

فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ﴿٥﴾ إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ﴿٦﴾

Indeed, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease. (Quran 94:5–6)

For Tired Parents

  • Ask Allah for strength for yourself and ease for your child. Your du’a is heard.
  • Rest without guilt. Looking after yourself helps you look after your child.
  • Celebrate the small steps. Allah sees every effort.
  • Ask for help from family, friends, and your community.
  • Speak to doctors and therapists about your child’s needs. Seeking help is part of taking the means and then trusting Allah.

How the Community Can Help

A masjid and a community are at their best when every family feels welcome. A kind greeting, a seat made ready, a patient smile when a child is loud or restless, an offer to watch the other children for an hour, a meal left at the door: small acts like these lift a whole family. Do not stare, do not pity, and do not ask intrusive questions. Include the child and welcome the parents.

Our Lord, grant us comfort to our eyes in our spouses and children, and make us leaders for the righteous. (Meaning of Quran 25:74)
