وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ يُسَبِّحُونَ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّهِمْ
Angels in the Qur'an
A journey through the many roles Allah's angels play, drawn directly from the verses of the Qur'an
"Praise be to Allah, the Bringer into Being of the heavens and earth, He Who made the angels messengers, with wings — two, three or four." — Surah Fatir (35:1)
Unseen Servants of Allah
Angels appear throughout the Qur'an in a remarkable variety of roles — from delivering revelation, to recording our every word, to standing witness on the Day of Judgement. Belief in angels is one of the six pillars of Iman, yet many Muslims know surprisingly little about what the Qur'an actually says about them. Below is a journey through the Qur'an's own descriptions, organized by theme.
✨ Jibril (Gabriel) — The Angel of Revelation
Jibril (AS) holds a uniquely honoured position among the angels, entrusted with delivering Allah's revelation to the Prophets. The Qur'an describes him as immensely strong and possessing great splendour: "It is nothing but Revelation revealed, taught him by one immensely strong, possessing power and splendour. He stood there stationary." — Surah An-Najm (53:4-6)
The Prophet ﷺ saw Jibril in his true form on more than one occasion: "And certainly he saw him in another descent, at the farthest lote-tree... Certainly he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord." — Surah An-Najm (53:13-18). He also appeared on the clear horizon: "He saw him on the clear horizon." — Surah At-Takwir (81:23)
Jibril also came to Maryam (AS) in the form of a handsome, well-built man to deliver news of Isa's (AS) coming birth: "Then We sent Our Spirit to her and it took on for her the form of a handsome, well-built man. She said, 'I seek refuge from you with the All-Merciful if you guard against evil.' He said, 'I am only your Lord's messenger so that He can give you a pure boy.'" — Surah Maryam (19:17-21)
📝 The Recording Angels
Two Angels at Every Person's Side
"We created man and We know what his own self whispers to him. We are nearer to him than his jugular vein. And the two recording angels are recording, sitting on the right and on the left. He does not utter a single word, without a watcher by him, pen in hand!" — Surah Qaf (50:16-18)
Beyond the two recording angels, the Qur'an describes a wider guard: "Everyone has a succession of angels in front of him and behind him, guarding him by Allah's command." — Surah Ar-Ra'd (13:11) And again: "Standing over you are guardians, noble, recording, who know what you do." — Surah Al-Infitar (82:10-12)
🔥 The Angels Guarding the Fire
The Qur'an describes stern, unyielding angels appointed over Hell: "You who believe! Safeguard yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones. Harsh, terrible angels are in charge of it who do not disobey Allah in respect of any order He gives them and carry out what they are ordered to do." — Surah At-Tahrim (66:6). Elsewhere, their number is given directly: "There are nineteen in charge of it." — Surah Al-Muddaththir (74:30-31)
🌿 Angels in Constant Worship
- They circle the Throne, glorifying their Lord with praise [Surah Az-Zumar 39:75]
- They stand drawn up in ranks and glorify Allah continuously [Surah As-Saffat 37:164-166]
- The thunder itself glorifies Allah's praise, as do the angels, out of fear of Him [Surah Ar-Ra'd 13:13]
- They ask forgiveness for those on the earth [Surah Ash-Shura 42:5]
- They fear their Lord and do everything they are commanded, without pride [Surah An-Nahl 16:49-50]
🙇 Prostrating to Prophet Adam (AS)
One of the most pivotal moments involving angels is Allah's command for them to prostrate before the newly-created Adam (AS): "We said to the angels, 'Prostrate to Adam!' and they prostrated, with the exception of Iblis. He refused and was arrogant and was one of the disbelievers." — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:30-34). Every angel obeyed instantly — it was Iblis, who was not an angel but a jinn, who refused.
📬 Angels Sent to the Prophets
Angels appeared directly to several Prophets with news and guidance. To Ibrahim (AS), they came with good news of a son despite his old age: "They said, 'We bring you good news of the truth, so do not be among those who despair.'" — Surah Al-Hijr (15:51-60). The same messengers went on to warn of the fate awaiting the people of Lut (AS), rescuing his family except for his wife [Surah Al-Ankabut 29:33-34].
To Zakariyya (AS), the angels called out while he stood in prayer, giving him the news of a son, Yahya (AS), despite his old age and his wife's barrenness [Surah Al 'Imran 3:39-41]. And to Maryam (AS), the angels announced that she had been chosen and purified above all other women, and gave her the news of Isa (AS) [Surah Al 'Imran 3:42-47].
🤲 Angels Supporting the Believers
Allah reminds the believers of the direct help sent through angels at the Battle of Badr: "Remember when you called on your Lord for help and He responded to you: 'I will reinforce you with a thousand angels riding rank after rank.'" — Surah Al-Anfal (8:9-10). At Badr and again referenced in Surah Al 'Imran, this support was described as reaching three thousand, and potentially five thousand angels for those who remained steadfast [Surah Al 'Imran 3:123-127].
Angels also descend with glad tidings to those who remain firm in their faith: "The angels descend on those who say, 'Our Lord is Allah,' and then go straight: 'Do not fear and do not grieve but rejoice in the Garden you have been promised.'" — Surah Fussilat (41:30-32)
🌙 Angels Descending on Laylatul Qadr
"Truly We sent it down on the Night of Power. And what will convey to you what the Night of Power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. In it the angels and the Spirit descend by their Lord's authority with every ordinance. It is Peace — until the coming of the dawn." — Surah Al-Qadr (97:1-5)
⚖️ Angels at the Time of Death and Judgement
The angel(s) of death take the soul of every person, and the Qur'an describes this moment differently for the righteous and the wrongdoers: "Those the angels take in a virtuous state. They say, 'Peace be upon you! Enter the Garden for what you did.'" — Surah An-Nahl (16:32). For the arrogant, it is described starkly: "How will it be when the angels take them in death, beating their faces and their backs?" — Surah Muhammad (47:27-28)
On the Day of Rising, the angels will be gathered around the edges of the heavens: "On that Day, eight will bear the Throne of their Lord above their heads." — Surah Al-Haqqah (69:16-17). And when the disbelievers are led to Hell, its custodians will question them: "Did no warner come to you?" — Surah Al-Mulk (67:8)
