Ramadan—The Month of Mercy, Qur'an, and Fasting

A blessed month of fasting, worship, forgiveness, and drawing closer to Allah

🌙 Welcome, Ramadan.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and one of the most blessed times of the year for Muslims. It is the month in which Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, increase their worship and seek the mercy and forgiveness of Allah.

Ramadan is much more than simply staying away from food and drink. It is a month of spiritual training — a time to strengthen our relationship with Allah, control our desires, improve our character and become people of greater taqwa.

Allah has given this month a special connection with the Qur'an. It is the month in which the Qur'an was revealed as guidance for mankind.

Ramadan is an invitation from Allah to return to Him with a sincere heart.

📖 Why Do We Fast?

“O believers! Fasting is prescribed for you — as it was for those before you — so that you may become mindful of Allah.”

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183

Allah does not describe fasting merely as hunger and thirst. He connects fasting with taqwa — becoming conscious and mindful of Him.

📖 The Month of the Qur'an

“The month of Ramadan is that in which the Qur'an was revealed, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.”

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185

The Qur'an should therefore be at the heart of our Ramadan.

Rather than treating Qur'an recitation as something we do only when we have spare time, Ramadan gives us an opportunity to make the Qur'an a central part of our daily lives.

🌙 Fasting in Ramadan

When Ramadan begins, fasting becomes obligatory for those who are able to fast, with the exemptions and concessions established by Islamic law for illness, travel and other circumstances.

Allah says:

“So whoever is present for the month, let them fast.”

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185

Fasting begins before dawn and continues until sunset. It teaches patience, discipline and gratitude, while reminding us of our dependence upon Allah.

❤️ A Month of Mercy and Forgiveness

Ramadan is a month in which we should increase our hope in the mercy of Allah.

It is a time to leave sins behind, make sincere tawbah and ask Allah to forgive our shortcomings.

Do not enter Ramadan believing that your past mistakes mean that you are not worthy of Allah's mercy.

Turn back to Allah. Ask Him. Trust His mercy. Begin again.

🕌 Make Salah the Centre of Your Day

Ramadan should strengthen our salah, not merely change our eating schedule.

Guard the five daily prayers and try to pray them with greater concentration. If you are able, make time for additional night prayer, including Taraweeh.

🕌 Five Daily Prayers

Protect every obligatory prayer and try to pray it at its proper time.

🌙 Taraweeh

Attend Taraweeh if you are able, or pray additional night prayer at home.

🤲 Duʿa

Use the blessed moments of Ramadan to make sincere duʿa and ask Allah for what is good.

🤲 Ramadan and Charity

Ramadan teaches us to think beyond ourselves. When we experience hunger and thirst, we should remember people who struggle with poverty every day.

Give according to your ability. Feed someone, assist a family, support a worthy cause or simply help someone who needs you.

A small act done sincerely for Allah can be greater than a large act done for recognition.

❤️ Ramadan Is Also About Character

Fasting should affect more than our stomachs. It should affect our speech, our behaviour and our relationships with others.

Use Ramadan to work on:

  • Controlling anger
  • Avoiding gossip
  • Speaking kindly
  • Forgiving others
  • Being patient
  • Helping family members
  • Avoiding arguments
  • Guarding the eyes and tongue
  • Being honest in business and daily life

The real success of fasting is seen in the person we become because of it.

📅 A Simple Ramadan Daily Plan

🌅 Before Fajr

Wake for Suhoor, make duʿa and prepare yourself for the day of fasting.

🕌 Fajr

Pray Fajr and spend some quiet time with the Qur'an and morning adhkar.

📖 During the Day

Work, fulfil your responsibilities, guard your tongue and use spare moments for dhikr and Qur'an.

🌇 Maghrib

Break your fast, make duʿa and remember Allah's blessings.

🌙 Isha & Night Prayer

Pray Isha and Taraweeh if able, then rest sufficiently for the next day.

🌙 The Last Ten Nights

As Ramadan progresses, do not allow tiredness or familiarity to cause your worship to decrease. The final ten nights are a precious opportunity to increase worship and seek Laylat al-Qadr.

Allah describes Laylat al-Qadr as a night better than a thousand months.

“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.”

Surah Al-Qadr 97:3

Increase your salah, Qur'an, dhikr, charity and duʿa during these precious nights.

✅ Ramadan Daily Checklist

  • ☐ Five daily prayers
  • ☐ Fast sincerely for Allah
  • ☐ Read Qur'an
  • ☐ Make morning and evening dhikr
  • ☐ Make sincere duʿa

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Make Ramadan a Family Journey

Ramadan is a wonderful opportunity for families to worship Allah together.

Encourage children to learn about fasting, Qur'an, prayer, charity and good character according to their age and ability.

Share meals, make duʿa together and remind one another gently about the purpose of Ramadan.

Let your home feel different during Ramadan — more Qur'an, more salah, more kindness and more remembrance of Allah.

📌 Remember the Purpose

Do not allow Ramadan to become only a month of special food, late nights and social gatherings.

Food is part of the experience, families should enjoy one another, and Muslims may celebrate the blessings Allah has given them — but the heart of Ramadan is worship.

Fasting, Qur'an, salah, charity, repentance and good character should remain at the centre of the month.

🌙 Make This Ramadan Different

Ramadan comes and goes quickly. Do not measure its success only by how many days you fasted.

Measure it by how much closer you became to Allah.

Did your salah improve? Did your heart soften? Did you forgive? Did you give? Did you read the Qur'an? Did you leave a sin? Did you become more patient? Did you become more grateful?

May Allah allow us to reach Ramadan, make the most of every precious day and night, accept our fasting and worship, forgive our sins, and allow us to leave Ramadan better than we entered it.
