Saying Bismillah

Lesson 1 — Starting every good deed in the name of Allah

The Story of the Young Sahabi

One day, a young companion of the Prophet ﷺ sat down to eat with his friends. Before taking even a small bite, he paused, closed his eyes, and whispered softly: "Bismillah."

His friends laughed. "Why do you always say that?" they asked. "It's just bread and dates."

The young boy smiled. "Because the Prophet ﷺ taught us that when we say Bismillah before eating, Allah fills the food with barakah. And if we forget, we can still say it when we remember: Bismillahi awwalahu wa aakhirahu—"In the name of Allah, at the beginning and at the end."

The Prophet ﷺ once said, "When one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah. If he forgets, let him say, "Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa aakhirihi." (Tirmidhi)

Why Saying Bismillah Matters

  • It reminds us that everything comes from Allah. Even a simple meal is a gift we did not create ourselves.
  • It brings barakah. The same food, said with Bismillah, nourishes the body and the soul.
  • It teaches humility. We begin with Allah's name, not our own.
  • It protects us. The Prophet ﷺ taught that Shaytan cannot share food over which Bismillah was said.

Try This at Home

This week's family challenge: Place a small card with "Bismillah" on your dining table. Before every meal this week, take turns saying it aloud together. When your child remembers without being reminded, give them a high-five and say, "MashaAllah — you're building a habit the Prophet ﷺ loved!"

Tip for parents: Young children learn by watching. Say "Bismillah" aloud yourself, even for small things—before drinking water, before starting the car, before opening a book. They will copy what they see.
